This book was originally published a long time ago and we bought it, used it and learned how to cook with it. International publishing phenomenon Delia Smith is renowned for her tried-and-tested, fool-proof recipes, and this comprehensive guide to cooking, with recipes that will become kitchen favourites, is no exception. Being retired and single, I cook for myself, and, even saying so myself, have become 'a dab hand' at it! And Delia Smith makes the best roast potatoes :) She might not have the media popularity of some of the other TV chef personalities, but she can sure cook and teach.

I am an avid cook and own many cookbooks but this is still my favourite, so much so that I have purchased it for my future daughter-in-law. She began her writing career 40 years ago on the Daily Mirror and since then has presented very many cookery series on television and published numerous bestselling cookery books including Delia Smith's Cookery Course, Summer and Winter Collections, The Vegetarian Collection, Delia's How to Cook and Delia's Happy Christmas among others. The original glassine wrapper is rather toned and a bit soiled, but the book itself is in very nice condition.

Somehow her innate niceness as a person comes though: which is easy to understand if you ever manage to see her on television. In addition there are step-by-step colour photographs illustrating basic techniques, such as how to make bread, chutney, marmalade and omelettes. It does not matter if you don't know one end of a pan from another or a practiced cook of years standing, this book is a must have. My life is so much better now that I don't just mash fruit into my mouth and gnaw on raw meat or vegetables depending on the time of year.
