About this deal

An original story Inspired from the wildlife, The Virunga National Park in Congo, where rangers are risking their lives to protect morning gorillas and the rest of the wildlife from the poachers. He spends a good portion of the book moralising about human misbehaviour and mistreatment of nature (which obviously isn’t totally incorrect), but that is somewhat undermined by the hypocrisy and total lack of nuance / painting all of humanity except himself with the poison apple brush.

However, the author anthropomorphizes the animals and projects very human feelings and motivations onto the animals, while simultaneously speaking as though human activity is almost always “bad”. Really weird silence around his own life and circumstances that made it more uncomfortable and hard to believe than strictly necessary. He adapts to their way of life, learns to eat and sleep among them, and acquires a unique understanding of these extraordinary creatures.

He witnesses births and deaths, loves and battles, ostracism and friendship over the cycles of their lives.

Part of the book's description reads: Deer Man is a moving story of what it’s like to be an outsider and how forming connections with the natural world can help us feel less alone. I avoid my parents, who disapprove of my new man-of-the-woods lifestyle and have no qualms about saying so.

Alone in the forest with no tent, no shelter and not even a sleeping bag or blanket is an exercise in pure survival, and so Geoffroy follows the deer's behaviour closely. The integration of a human in the lives of the deer is a study of patience, trust and wisdom - for both the human and the roe deer. One trusts Delorme enough to follow his lead to safety during a hunt and then shares what the human taught him with other deer!

This book will make you reconsider your next venture into nature and reframe your default field of attention to the overlooked habits and activities of its inhabitants. Now 37, he has written an extraordinary memoir of his experiences: a literary sensation in France, and already translated into 11 languages.
