About this deal

There's a family curse, a spooky mountain, a healthy amount of Faust, and it's just thick, solid adventure from that point on.

This is a story about deception, about detective work, the importance of learning other languages, about friendship and family, about secrets and codes, and most importantly about trains. Legend has it the Kratzensteins, a family of rich and powerful railway tycoons, are cursed, but there is no such thing as a curse, is there . I honestly can not believe that an installment in this series actually got less than 4 stars and that makes me so sad. Harrison Beck undertakes another locomotive mystery in the fourth instalment of Leonard and Sedgman’s thrilling Adventures on Trains series, as a cursed family of railway tycoons high in the German mountains makes for a sinister supernatural mystery.Another train journey turns into another adventure for Harrison Beck and his Uncle Nathaniel Bradshaw. Don’t forget to check out our latest Book Club snack – this month we’ve got our top tips for some tasty travel snacks! I think it's actually a children's book, and it was the sort of book that I'd have been very interested In between the ages of 10 and 12.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. If I could add one small caveat with this book then it would be that there are too many characters, which made things confusing, and quite a lot of them are similarly named also. Although I'm still interested in continuing this series, this story was probably the worst in the series. The old family home (more of a castle, with a train station inside) is big enough to hide many secrets. From a creaking old house at the foot of the Harz mountains, they take the Kratzenstein family's funeral train to the peak of the Brocken Mountain. There's four new kids to keep up with, some with more personality than others, and I'm still not sure who Ozan is. This adventure seems a little more serious to Hal, and it doesn’t help that Uncle Nat is behaving oddly too!

Whilst Hal and Nat did travel to reach the crime scene and trains were still a key component of the story, I did miss the element of a crime occurring on a train and needing to be solved before it reaches its final destination. This had many elements that I think you would expect to find in an adventure story - a missing will, a curse, a secret room.
