About this deal

We’re the kind that give people what they know they really need, not what we think they ought to want. Nanny Ogg quite liked cooking, provided there were other people around to do things like chop up the vegetables and wash the dishes afterwards. A non-Discworld book, Good Omens, his 1990 collaboration with Neil Gaiman, has been a longtime bestseller, and was reissued in hardcover by William Morrow in early 2006 (it is also available as a mass market paperback (Harper Torch, 2006) and trade paperback (Harper Paperbacks, 2006). Jason is something of a gentle giant (somewhat like Constable Bluejohn), and very deferring and respectful to his mother and other witches.

Indeed, in Thief of Time, Nanny Ogg is sought through various timeframes as she is/will become the best midwife in the world. People go to Granny Weatherwax for help when they have no choice, but they go to Nanny for advice all the time. Perhaps the most surprising thing about this book is that these appear to be legitimate recipes (I haven't tried any yet, but even the Dwarfish bread recipe comes without the usual gravel; apparently this is a recipe for the city Dwarf who has gone soft). Discworld illustrator Paul Kidby expressed a similar view of the character, writing "I like to think we all know someone like Nanny Ogg, a person who enjoys a drink and has led a happy and full life. His novels have been widely adapted for stage and screen, and he was the winner of multiple prizes, including the Carnegie Medal. And you never get people from a long way off coming to our part of the world lookin’ for, as it might be, the Cottage of Doom or the Lost Chicken Shed. Nanny Ogg's Cookbook is a book of recipes and wisdom of the Discworld character Nanny Ogg by Terry Pratchett, Stephen Briggs and Tina Hannan, and illustrated by Paul Kidby.

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, which just goes to show they’re as confused about anatomy as they gen’rally are about everything else, unless they’re talking about instructions on how to stab him, in which case a better way is up and under the ribcage. As skilled a witch as Granny, but in other ways, able to manipulate events and people (even Granny) by being herself – in capital letters – fond of a dram, or three; fond of a lad, or three; she is Granny's connection to a different world. In addition to the delights of the Strawberry Wobbler and Nobby's Mum's Distressed Pudding, Mrs Ogg imparts her thoughts on life, death, etiquette, courtship, children and weddings, all in a refined style that should not offend the most delicate of sensibilities. As described in Maskerade, after knowing her for fifteen minutes, people feel as if they have known her all of their lives.
