About this deal

Bestselling author Beatriz Williams skillfully sets a story of love and sacrifice against the backdrop of war in her fascinating new novel… Readers will be spellbound by Williams’ elegant prose, fascinating characters and unforgettable settings while fully engrossed by the novel’s dual plots. In fact, Windsor-era Nassau roils with spies, financial swindles, and racial tension, and in the middle stands Benedict Thorpe: a scientist of magnetic charm and murky national loyalties. She also meets people who will ultimately be connected to the murder but that is NOT a big part of the central plot.

Any "Author Information" displayed below reflects the author's biography at the time this particular book was published. Thankfully, he is in therapy and has some pretty great grounding techniques to help when he has derealization episodes. The Golden Hour is a moving little slice-of-life that addresses many important issues in a productive way.A columnist for an American women's magazine stationed in the Bahamas in the early 1940s, Lulu reports on the doings of the former Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson—scrupulously avoiding all mention of the thicket of political corruption and racial tension that surrounds them. Young Manuel has PTSD, as his teacher was injured in a school shooting to which Manuel happened to see and pulled a fire alarm for help. When real-life philanthropist Harry Oakes is found murdered on the island in 1943, the duke takes a particular interest in the case.

Of course, there is some romance in the book as she crosses paths with the mysterious Benedict Thorpe. Lulu's Bahamas storyline acknowledges the American obsession with British royalty — but thankfully also delves into the not-so-glamorous politics of the times. And let's not forget the watering hole at Nassau's Prince George Hotel, and Jack, the bartender who gave me a Casablanca vibe. Alternating, among these lives and times, we learn of love, sorrow, betrayal, affairs, wars, and a family's history.
