I began mapping out the different colour areas, beginning with the palest: the slightly grey-green areas around the highlights on the frog’s skin. However, I chose to paint the oranges next instead so that I didn’t run the risk of having the black bleed into the orange as I applied that around it in the eye.

When I was happy with things tonally and the paper was dry, I used my size 000 brush to add final details such as the lines to the mouth, the eye, and on the bamboo, and the little shadows under the feet.I kept my mix really pale and used a combination of Permanent Sap Green and a touch of Payne’s Gray with lots of water.

This is crucial because we perceive colours relative to the colours near them, so as we layer and darken one colour, it affects how those near to it look.

This open edition print of my original watercolour painting is printed with archival non-fade inks on quality heavy 250gsm paper.

I kept the mix watery as I was again trying to match the lightest tonal values within these areas of colour.
