It’s been a top performer for me, giving seeds of all shapes, sizes and requirements an excellent kick-start in life. They offer both seed and multipurpose composts (including biodynamic and vegan options), together with dry coir products for those wanting to make their own mixes, together with plant foods suited to their products. We’ve also had low germinations, but as ever its hard to fathom the causes of this, although another (very experienced) grower to whom we gave a few bags has also had germination issues.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Could you please advise on what peat free media is suitable for seed sowing, as the coir chips seem far too chunky for this purpose? If you’re planning a large rockery aim to concentrate the peat-free mix on the spots where you will do the most planting. Some of the peat free mixes available seem to contain bark and recommend re-potting every 2/3 years.

Sorry to hear that you are experiencing similar problems to us with FF products though it is reassuring that it the problems with poor germination etc aren’t solely down to us. Scarid fly seems worse on the WRO and generally FF has not suffered, a layer of vermiculite and application of the biocontrol nematode helps or use the mite ‘Hypoaspis miles’ on a regular (2 weekly) basis as a preventative. The range also includes SylvaGrow Ericaceous Compost, for acid-loving plants, and will be joined in spring 2017 by SylvaGrow Organic, certified by the Soil Association.

If they do not keep checking their end product these will not be identified and thus critical adjustments to the mix will not be made.
