About this deal

Dalgleish is strong throughout and charismatic, he makes his presence known, and remains dogged in pursuit of the killer. We have a whole host of suspects and motives and the novel is, as you would expect, extremely well plotted. They aren’t just cardboard cut-outs, they are fully realized people with their own motivations and prejudices. This Collectors’ Edition is sewn by hand and then quarter-bound in cloth, also by hand, in Yorkshire. Pre-injury I read every one of her books and enjoyed them tremendously for their good writing and good stories.

I shall remain grateful to PD James for the enjoyment her books once gave me, but sometimes it’s best to leave the past undisturbed.

D. James I thought not as flawless as her later ones, in that her word-craft was less honed, and I felt her Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh made one or two faux pas he never would have done today. When one of the main characters is removed, I would argue the show isn't made better by their demise, that individual adds a lot to the story.

At a dinner at All Souls, Elaine Greene, Phyllis's newly acquired agent, sat next to Charles Monteith, a director from Faber. Nevertheless, a girl from among the "stumblers" (unmarried, with a baby) is accepted as a maid in a respectable estate. It suffers from all the flaws I've found pervasive in her other novels – boring descriptions, unlikeable characters, and zero suspense. Martha is aided by a housemaid, Sally Jupp, an unmarried mother who seems to take lightly what would once have been a cause of shame. The matriarch of the family hires a young unmarried single mother named Sally Jupp to help with Mrs.Publisher s red quarter cloth over printed paper covered boards, gilt titles to spine, decorative endpapers. The decorated boards and text block appear to be in an unread condition and are square, tight, clean and bright. Sally works at the local manor house for the Maxie family, and it is apparent that eldest son Stephen has more than a passing interest in her. Prior to her death, Jupp had revealed that the Maxie's son Stephen had proposed marriage to her, even though he was supposedly attached already to another house guest Catherine.

The night after the village church fete maid sally jupp is found strangled in her locked bedroom with her crying baby in his crib. Every year the church holds an annual celebration (a fete); this year, the day after the proceedings finds Sally dead at unknown hands, behind locked doors. The pavements were spilling with housewives who every now and then, as if propelled by some primeval urge, streamed with maddening slowness across the path of the traffic. Everything gets wrapped up neatly, and the detective’s solution doesn’t have any obvious holes in it, so overall, solid three stars – no more, no less. Cover Her Face was adapted for television in 1985, starring Roy Marsden, Phyllis Calvert and Mel Martin.

James mentions in passing, for instance, that Dalgleish owns a 30-foot sailing boat, a random fact, to be sure. CAST=3 stars: Here, Detective Chief Inspector Adam Dalgiesh feels rather flat, but at a first outing, no author wants to give too much away about a series P. There is a natural human desire to look away or to cover up the ugliness of life — to “cover her face.
