The book opens on Floss's eleventh birthday, when her mother and Steve take her to TGI Friday's, and tell her that they are going to Australia for six months because of Steve's job.

the dad is not very good at ironing or putting up swings but they live on a diet of chip butties and candyfloss from the local funfair. Later, Susan, along with her parents, goes to stay in her holiday home in France and says farewell to Floss at the beginning of summer. Floss is our heroine with the candyfloss hair and Charlie is her dad who she decides to live with after a very difficult decision. I feel like publishers are underestimating an American kid by making the change that serves no purpose -- especially since it's such a British story.

She announces to Floss on her birthday that the whole family is moving to Australia for Steve's new job and is heartbroken when Floss remains with Charlie. But then her step-dad gets a promotion and her mum springs it on her that they are moving to Australia for 6 months. Floss ends her friendship with Rhiannon and finds a new friend, Susan, who is interested in all her favorite things.

When Flossie's mom and stepdad move to Sydney for six months, Flossie convinces her mother to let her stay with her loving but inept father in London. Flora starts of living with her mum and staying with her dad on the weekends but then Flora/Floss/Flossie has to make the decision of her life. Floss is able to spend every weekend with her father but has to live with her mother and her new husband for the rest of each week. I also can't for the love of god comprehend the fact that both the dieting culture and bodyshaming just about anyone were so casual, not just in this book but in many of author's books.I'm wondering if Flora had a crush on all of her friends (Rhiannon - I would too, Susan - I would too, and Ella - ofc I would too) or maybe the news of Jacqueline's coming out made me see things and project my own experiences.
