About this deal

Over the next few days, the social worker uncovered more and more clues which seemed to suggest that the homeless man could indeed be guilty of the murder: he carried a long knife; he no longer had the black leather jacket that he normally lived in; he had also got rid of a new pair of training shoes; he was moody and tearful; he was talking about leaving London and going up north. When asked how she felt about Alison, she responded "When you see a person and you don't see the other person with them, it doesn't really enter your head.

The Evening Standard did report the crucial statement of Christina Wright, but otherwise its lavish photographic presentation – ‘first pictures of the sisters accused of murdering bride’ – reinforced the overall impression that this was a murder case and a half.

After that, the sisters would have had to park the car, and Michelle would have had to compose herself so thoroughly that not even close associates could detect anything untoward in her manner. However, it was heard that two girls had been seen leaving Alison Shaughnessy's flat around the time she was murdered, that one of the sisters fingerprints were found inside the flat and that one of the sisters, the elder one, had been having an affair with Alison Shaughnessy's husband and had kept a diary detailing the relationship in which she had expressed hate for Alison Shaughnessy and in which she had written that she wished that Alison Shaughnessy would just vanish so that she could have her husband to herself. The final straw may have been, alleged the prosecution, when John told Michelle only days before the murder that he was planning to give up the flower arranging sessions he did with her every Monday, which was the only time they had together and when they invariably had sex. As far as the lawyer can establish, the police never traced Williams and excluded him from the inquiry without ever speaking to him.

Little can be determined about the attacker from the nature of the wounds, which depend a great deal on the weapon; and the weapon in this case was never traced. But a month later Miss Tapp was arrested for conspiring to murder Mrs Shaughnessy and immediately withdrew the statements. She had just moved into a new house with her husband and they planned to move back to Ireland to start a family. It was known that both took part in jujitsu, a martial art which teaches fighting with bare hands and knives. A careful reading of the diary entries thereafter would have shown her growing disaffection with him, and sympathy with Alison. An uninformed observer might well have reasoned that in due course Michelle and Lisa would take their place as two of the most notorious murderers in English criminal history. But it will come as no consolation to them that in Britain's unhappy litany of miscarriages of justice, that was a relatively short period of wrongful imprisonment. a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z aa ab ac ad ae af ag ah ai aj ak al am an ao ap aq ar as at au av aw ax ay az ba bb bc bd be bf bg bh bi bj bk bl bm bn bo bp bq br bs bt bu Real Crime (29 September 2003). Both of them are holding on to their humour in the hope that the court of appeal will open the prison door for them. The court heard that the elder sister didn't admit to having the affair with Alison Shaughnessy's husband until two months after the murder.
