About this deal

Kelty reckons its new waypoint is its “biggest and softest” pad yet, and at 76cm wide and a generous 8cm of height, we wouldn’t disagree. is a camping sleeping mat made of durable Nylon ripstop fabric, which is resistant to tearing and abrasions. Not only is the mat 25% shorter but it’s only 25mm thick… With that in mind, I think I would stick with the 40mm pad and save some money.

Uniquely in this test the Comfort Plus has a double layer construction, with inflatable chambers on both sides of the mat, each served via its own valve. It is easy to use: plug it into the valve, flick it full of air, roll the closure tight and squeeze. This operates with a simple pull mechanism, and can also be twisted to lock it closed so there's no danger of accidental deflation in the night. My day job involved making furniture from recycled wood (I'm a furniture maker and carpenter by trade).

in Nemo’s high-performing tensor, which is ideal for campers who like to venture far from the madding crowds with their tent. It took a bit of puff for us to get this mat inflated, but the 9cm thickness combined with Thermolite insulation kept us warm and comfortable out on the trail, even in temperatures that hovered around freezing.Sea to Summit isn’t messing around when it sticks “comfort” and “deluxe” in the name of this rather sumptuous sleeping pad. The Flux 3 has an R-value of 3, which means that it provides insulation suitable for 3 seasons, meaning it’s suitable to use most of the year but not in temperatures below freezing. Both layers can be adjusted independently using the fine tune valve to get just the right level of softness and support.

A pair of elastic straps help to maintain the item’s compact form, whether it’s to be tucked away or removed. We wanted a mat that's minimalist enough for lightweight backpacking or alpine bivvies, but still warm enough for UK winter camping or even, at the extreme end, expedition use.

The XTherm air mattress delivers the greatest warmth-to-weight ratio available in any air mattress by far, with a softer, textured no-slip fabric for better next-to-skin comfort and a quieter rest.

I headed up my favourite mountain in Snowdonia and pitched up with a beautiful view of the Ogwen Valley, enjoying the peace and solitude of the outdoors with a gorgeous sunset. Its aesthetic triangular baffle design not only promotes high levels of insulation but comfort as well. By way of comparison: the Therm-a-Rest Original Z-Lite, a benchmark mountaineer's closed cell foam mat, has an R-value of 2. Backpackers and wild campers will want a compact and lightweight mat (some compress as small as a water bottle and weigh under 400g). It’s no wonder that the Xlite has won the editor’s choice award in Backpacker magazine for its innovative design.
