The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. It has also reawakened interest amongst film companies, something the many fans of the book will be especially pleased to hear too. The plot of North Child is constructed around the Norwegian fairy tale ‘East of the Sun and West o’ the Moon’.

When that’s been blocked, wrapped and given with love, the crackers have been pulled and the pudding is going down, I plan to bash out a couple more hats for the Pussyhat Project before the deadline of January 14th – cerise yarn ready and waiting.

The lyrical writing and bold sweep of the story as Rose travels north will cast a spell over every reader. However as a “softskin” she stands out and needs to disguise herself as a servant until she can try and make contact with her beloved White Bear. Making a pact with an enormous white bear, Rose travels on his back to a mysterious castle that holds a dark enchantment, a darker temptation, and the key to her true destiny? I loved everything about it from the title to the magnificent white bear to the enchanted castle to the powerful North, South, East and West Winds.

Yet even so, she’s particularly delighted that the reissue of North Child has sparked so many new ideas. I kept the main colour of peaty undyed-black lettlopi, but subtly altered the yoke palette to a more grown-up suggestion of grellow . Because the man/bear failed to break his curse within a year, the troll queen who placed him under the curse comes to take him to her castle "east of the sun and west of the moon," where he will be her prisoner. It was very satisfying to arrange my precious circular needles in this beautiful chintz needle wrap by Ericka Eckles, which is now in constant use and making me happy with its mustard-gold roses. When Rose gets homesick the white bear takes her home where she is allowed to stay for one month as long as she doesn't tell her family about her experiences with the white bear especially her mother.Its lengthiness could discourage reluctant readers while its fundamental weaknesses may irritate stronger readers. In trying to uncover the truth North Child, Rose, unwittingly lets him fall into the hands of the Troll Queen who wants the man hidden under the white fur to be her husband. While writing North Child, which is based on the Norwegian fairy tale East of the Sun and West of the Moon, Edith became an expert in mapmaking, seamanship, Scandinavian languages, Norse mythology and the Arctic, journeying by ship through the fjords of Norway.
