Herron strips his revenge story to the bone, paring away unnecessary characters, episodes, speeches and gestures to produce a violent little elegy that grows both more clever and more sour as it hurtles along. Herron's trademark witty dialogue and sensorily descriptive writing once again pulls me in and keeps me engaged. Even if Slough House means nothing to you I'd still recommend Nobody Walks as a standalone thriller. The underground, arteries hardening, was a wheezing queue of trains in the which passengers, squeezed into awkward shapes, counted down the stations of the cross.I admit to a bit of paranoia and some willingness to use social lies to get events to work out to my liking, but I am a rank amateur compared to these folk. But there are too many details, blatant and hidden, in every sentence that if missed by the reader will lessen the impact of its ending. Mick Herron introduces Tom Bettany, a man with a violent past and only one thing to live for: Avenging his son's death.

It reminded me a lot of The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, with its complex motivations and use of an agent perhaps past his best-before date. Although this is not an official Slough House book, it does live in the same universe and introduces some important characters that appear in later books.
