About this deal

You feel a connection to each of the protagonists and are invested in their outcomes and the solving of the mysteries within the story. Once they establish themselves and the plot began to knit together, Hide and Seek becomes unputdownable – while it took me a week to finish the first few chapters, I read the rest in two sittings. A relentless, twisting page-turner, Hide and Seek delves deeply into every parent's worst nightmare.

It seems life in the neighbourhood is not all hunky dory and apart from Lily’s disappearance that people have good reason to keep schtum about things. No doubt about it, you’ll race to the end of this book with your heart thumping and nails bitten to the quick as this is such a terrific read that slowly and assuredly uncovers the lies and half truths that have entwined themselves around the neighbourhood of Rowanbrook. This wealthy suburb of Dublin has umpteen secrets plastered over with plausible lies, it’s a mission to uncover those and and the truth when it comes makes absolute sense. There were one or two occasions where I briefly stopped and thought oh why is such a thing being referenced for it seems so inconsequential?

She expertly ratchets up the tension in this single-sitting read, a nerve-shredder that will have you guessing right until the final unexpected twist. Before she has finished unpacking all the boxes she finds out that her new home was once the home of three-year-old Lily Murphy. I read this very quickly after being approved for it on Netgalley, primarily because I have really enjoyed the author’s previous thrillers and I hoped this would be another propulsive, compulsive read.Because Joanna thinks she knows what really happened to Lily - and if the truth gets out, it might be her undoing. No One Saw a Thing, her most recent novel, sold more than 100,000 copies in thirteen weeks and was No. I’ve loved her previous books so I was delighted to get an advanced copy of Hide and Seek, prior to its release in August.

The two timelines also flowed seamlessly and worked well together to build up the tension and reveal what happened to the child. Right from the opening paragraph there is a creepy, eerie and unsettling feeling that only grows the further the book develops. If you are keen on a twisty psychological thriller that slowly untangles a web of half-truths then this is the book for you. A special thank you to Bantam Press, Andrea Mara, NetGalley and Pigeonhole for the opportunity to read. It is one of those books that as a reader at times you find yourself holding your breath, at other times you think you might have solved the mystery of what happened to Lily, only to have it thrown into doubt.

I don’t want to say too much; it’s killing me not to comment on some of my favourite parts of the story but it would give it away. Andrea Mara proved herself a master storyteller in last year’s All Her Fault, that turned another child abduction plot on its head with a brilliant last-act twist. This fast-paced crime thriller will have your literally on the edge of your seat with turning of each page. This book really needs to come with a warning that you will not get any work done until you have finished it.
