About this deal

It was a golden era for occult lodges, when anyone with a robe and a philosophy cherry-picked from Hermeticism, Cabala and the mysterious East could found a lodge and recruit eager followers. The style of writing may be too congested or dense for some tastes; however, I did find it a straightforward and easily digestible read.

A comparative study between the current Regardie/Wang deck and the classic Magical Tarot of the Golden Dawn Deck will reveal a large difference in the colouring, especially in the in the minor arcana, where the Wang deck does not use the four colour scales. If you’re working through Regardie’s The Golden Dawn plus Wang’s Qabalistic Tarot, then this is a great study deck to pair with your reading. I would recommend this text for starting out on a Golden Dawn Tarot journey; it would give a good solid grounding. Beth, meanwhile, signifies a house, and the optimal architectural construct for a house is the cube, and if we revisit the discussion on the Cube of Space, it’s symbolic of the three becoming the four, where the four elements manifest distinctly. The high priestess is a powerful woman in the midst of controlling powerful energies as she casts a spell. It's not a deck I feel inspired by as I find some of the images a bit flat and the colours of some of the cards a bit washed out. Suitable for both beginners interested in the occult and seasoned tarot practitioners, this deck offers a comprehensive experience of the teachings of the Golden Dawn. For example, the Queen of Disks is Water (all Queens) of Earth (all Disks) and the symbols for these two elements appear at the top of the card. The images here are intended to illustrate the energies of the Qabalah, “that body of sacred knowledge which originated with esoteric Judaism” but today, is “viewed in Christian terms.

On a second trip he met artists Skip Dudchus and David Sledzinski and worked out the details of redrawing the Whare Ra deck for the Magical Tarot of the Golden Dawn book. This particular instantiation of that tradition, the Magical Tarot of the Golden Dawn by Pat Zalewski and David Sledzinski, is especially fun for me to work with because it uses the four Golden Dawn color scales as the basis for its coloring, just as my Color Outside the Lines edition of the Life Line Tarot does. An Englishman who did just that visited Levi in Paris in 1861 and changed the course of history for English occultism and for Tarot. Wang echoes Crowley’s point about Key 7– it is “the symbol of the Great Work” and “the sublimation of the Psyche.

Robert Wang has faithfully rendered in authentic detail each card of The Golden Dawn Tarot deck based upon the esoteric notebooks of MacGregor Mathers. After living in Rabaul, New Guinea, in the 1960's, Zalewski travelled throughout south-east Asia, studying tantric yoga in India and eventually settling in New Zealand in 1970. Some followers of the Golden Dawn tradition believe that the Secret Chiefs were not human or supernatural beings, but rather symbolic representations of actual or legendary sources of spiritual esotericism. e., The Hierophant, The Magician, The Hermit, and The Lovers, representing the four aspects of occult wisdom). Another relationship to bear note of: The Death card bears a direct kinship to The High Priestess, and is the opposition or polarity to The Moon card.
