About this deal

That player receives the Concordia card (which offers a 7 point bonus), and each other player gets one more turn. Ultimately, our sixth player didn’t arrive so we bandied a number of five-player titles around that could be played in under two hours. This running tally is in contrast to the physical game where VP are not tallied until the very end of the game leaving you in suspense as to how well you and your opponents are doing however the inclusion of a toggle option to provide this information throughout will suit some players and can be a big aid for beginners learning how to play and score well.

It’s an adaptation of a mechanism I first saw in Puerto Rico (then again in Small World and Twilight Imperium) and I think this might be my favorite implementation yet. Concordia: Digital Edition is a turn-based strategy game where 2 to 6 players face each other in the fight for wealth and influence. Some reward a specialist—if someone has focused on building trading houses in wine or cloth regions, that could lead to a big payday during final scoring. Concordia is a classic trading in the Mediterranean game that seems to have become something of a meme in board gaming.

Designer Mac Gerdts has become known for his board game rondel; a system of taking actions he employed in his last five or six games and one I’ve really enjoyed (I borrowed heavily from it for The Empire Engine). It’s still good, mind you, and fine for a change of pace, but the bar for quality set by the base game is high enough that this seems awkward by comparison. The cards you add to your hand dictate your strategy, because each card, besides being an extra action to take, also makes you better at scoring the card’s endgame points bonus. When you only have to worry about one other player, you can regularly size up the competition and it’s easy to remember which cards that player has in hand for planning purposes. Because, in Concordia, it doesn’t only matter how much of something you possess at the end of the game that determines how much VP you score for it but it is also multiplied by the number of the matching God you have on your cards. Now, this doesn’t cut you off completely–you can still build after someone in a city–but it costs more, sometimes making those precious turns of saving up fruitless.

They place a good token in each province matching the most expensive good produced by that province. When you use the prefect action, you choose a province (out of 12 on the main game board), and get the resource shown, plus all of the cities in that province produce resources for the people who have buildings there. Concordia is an advertisement for the best that Euro games have to offer: simple rules, tense decisions, player interaction (without overt player conflict), and near limitless replayability.I think Concordia is a nigh perfect game, but there are a couple of things that some players might not like. At its height, the Roman Empire extended from Britannia, to Egypt and Babylonia, and encompassed the Mediterranean Sea. I
