About this deal

Still, most of the units are at least passable to good, and it’s quite a hefty chunk of points, too. The Broodlord and Genestealers are a solid core to build around, and helpful whether you’re building a full Tyranids army or just adding a Kraken Detachment of Genestealers to your Forces of the Hive Mind army. If you want to play with either of those, they’re very cool and have their own great models, but they aren’t part of the “Chaos Space Marines’ umbrella. That said, you can at least get somewhere with this – all of Succubi, Wyches, and Venoms are good units you’ll want for a budding Drukhari army, and Reavers are OK I guess.

A Grade products may arrive with or without cellophane and may have minor cosmetic damage to the box. Also note that the Pack box is full of great bitz which are still compatible with Primaris models, so if you do find yourself wanting a cheap HQ, some small Marines, and a pile of bitz to work with, this isn’t the worst place to look.

If we were going to pick some to recommend against, it would have to be the basic Space Marines and Blood Angels boxes, which are almost entirely made up of trap choices – meanwhile Deathwatch and Thousand Sons both offer fantastic selections, even if they suffer from containing unique characters. You’re going to need at least one Lord Discordant, a Master of Possession, 1-3 units of Cultists, several boxes of Chosen and Possessed, and likely 10 Terminators. If you’re going Night Lords, this is also a time to add a unit or two of Raptors and maybe a unit of Warp Talons. I can’t stress enough that this is going to cause you short-term wallet shock and long-term disappointment as which units and strategies are “good” changes, but then you probably already knew that. The Orks box has the dubious honour of being the only Start Collecting without a legal HQ choice in it, thanks to force organisational changes in 8th edition.

Once you’ve got that, you’ll almost certainly jettison the Helbrute at some point and look at better options like another Venomcrawler or a Vindicator. In this new book, many of the Traitor Legions receive new Warlord Traits, Stratagems, Artefacts and more besides, offering them greater narrative depth than ever before. A lot of the best Chaos Space Marine strategies rely on copious use of stratagems, relics, and Warlord Traits. Their legion trait gives enemies a Leadership debuff at close range, and they have a number of abilities that key off attacking enemies with lower Leadership.Even if you could get Suppressors somewhere else, this box would still be an incredibly good value based on what’s in it. The rules for the Alpha Legion tend to favor versatility and subterfuge, and they have several rules that can apply to Cultists by virtue of just being INFANTRY-keyworded, though you may find they don’t necessarily want to run a ton of cultists. Because of this, they really want to take Raptors and Chaos Spawn, which can further stack another -1 Ld on targets to help grease the wheels on their trait abilities, taking units with Ld 8 down to 5.

In “Getting Started,” we look at how to get started with an army – the basics you need to know, how to start collecting models that will leave you with a serviceable army, and what the best deals are. Space Wolves don’t have Troop Scouts, which makes Intercessors even more useful for them and the Primaris Battle Leader is a fine HQ to have. The Chaos Space Marines have a ton of powers and Stratagems, and if you’re like me, it’s helpful to have something to track those during games. Often, chaos legions will ride into battle alongside daemons, or with the support of the great towering war machines who have also turned traitor – Chaos Knights. Chaos Space Marines unit (10 miniatures, each supplied with a Citadel 32mm Round Base)The rules for these models can be found in Codex: Chaos Space Marines. The only weak point here is Watch Captain Artemis – like Ahriman in the Thousand Sons box, you’re probably only going to want one of this guy, although he’s good fodder for conversion into something else especially with the array of options on the Deathwatch Kill Team sprues (and upgrade sprue! It comes with a Master of Possession, 10 Chaos Marines, a Venomcrawler, 2 Possessed, and 2 Obliterators.
