About this deal

Notes On Heartbreak is a seamless transition from columns to books for Annie Lord, who maintains her magnetic writing style over a longer form . That's what Moll said the night I came home after he broke up with me and I didn't know what that meant except that something irreversible had been set in motion.

Reeling from a broken heart, Annie Lord revisits the past - from the moment she first fell in love, the shared in-jokes and intertwining of a long-term relationship, to the months that saw the slow erosion of a bond five years in the making. I found myself welling up as she discussed their inside jokes, and how they crafted a language that only they both understood. It’s a hard pill to swallow and it’s a good, long cry, the kind that leaves snot, not so much dripping but pouring from your nose. He must have been planning it for a while; no one breaks up with someone after five years on a whim. Because I guess when you’re in a breakup, you always think whatever you’re going through is so unique and romantic and special and different. I also think it’s wonderful how despite initiating the breakup, Annie really humanises Joe and doesn’t make him a villain we’re supposed to dislike.

What I loved about Notes on Heartbreak is that as Annie discovers and shares with such a raw and unbreakable truth is that this is okay. It’s one of those books that unconsciously starts inhabiting all corners of your brain in such a beautiful, cathartic way. This journey back to your own self is the part about the last two years that I have enjoyed the most and like Annie, the support of my friends along the way has been invaluable beyond words. This release charts the ups and downs of a long-term relationship and explores the ways it slowly began to come apart - all with a precise, unsparing eye. I was definitely lingering over it and taking my time with it, because despite reading like a novel, it was still non-fiction and that, for some reason, always slows my reading down by at least twenty-five percent, at a minimum. Our interview is littered with sentences that open with “you know when you… ” which have the gradual effect of creating identification. Notes on Heartbreak by Annie Lord, published by Trapeze, is available in Hardback, eBook and audio now. I want Dad to preserve Joe in his mind that way because what if Joe changes his mind and I’ve already told my parents? If you’ve read her articles in Vogue, this book is only an extension of her ability to find a perfect balance between colloquial relatability and profound ideas.
