About this deal

This was the first coherent version of the movie, and was edited right up to the date of the screening to remove some superfluous scenes, including a few minor characters that died twice.

Barker piles on more subversive subtext than his story can bear — it's a monster movie, after all — but his daft, Grand Guignol vision has real power. Upon encountering supernatural creatures Kinski and Peloquin, Kinski says they should bring him below, but Peloquin refuses to allow in a normal human. It's a bit amazing that Nightbreed even managed to earn a cult following though, as its original theatrical cut was heavily compromised, with distributor 20th Century Fox cutting nearly an hour of material out of the film without Barker's consent, with the cut footage thought to be lost. During an interview in 2022 on The Ghost of Hollywood, cinematographer Robin Vidgeon, mentioned that he disliked working with David Cronenberg, stating Cronenberg complained to Clive that he was being usurped. Speaking of which, lots of additional creatures are shown inside Midian, showing off previously unseen practical effects. The original film was full of nice ideas that seemed underdeveloped but the director does a short interview at the start of this version explaining his motives for the director's cut (he states it was butchered by the studio originally) and what wanted to achieve and I think he largely succeeded. After handing off Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) to his friend Tony Randel, he took up production on an ambitious film version of his novella, Cabal (Poseidon Press, 1988). For the film, Barker used three soundstages at Pinewood Studios shooting some scenes on location at Wexham Park Hospital, Slough, Berkshire, UK over several nights and in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It has a commentary by Russell Cherrington and Jimmi Johonson, and another by Jose Leitao and Ryan Danhauser. This is the ultimate validation of choices made by myself and Mark Miller all the way back in 2008".

Early on in the film, a new phone conversation between protagonist Boone (Craig Sheffer) and antagonist Dr. Importantly, this cut includes more gore and much more time with the monsters, which, in turn, better matches the novella’s intended themes and gives the climax actual dramatic context. It was a combination of screenings around the world by Russell, a petition assembled by Jose, social-media push by the members of the Clive Barker Podcast to keep the momentum going until Morgan Creek saw that it was a viable product. This is an extremely limited release, it was edited by Seraphim using the HD footage not previously available to the earlier versions of the Cabal Cut, but maintains the spirit and focus of the original. There are truly remarkable visual ideas spliced between really bland expositional/dialogue-driven sequences – the kind of generic footage that would’ve never made the cut on an incredibly efficient movie, like Hellraiser . The song "Country Skin" is a country-and-western rendition of the Oingo Boingo song "Skin" (which appears on the 1990 album Dark at the End of the Tunnel), it was written by Elfman and performed by country singer Michael Stanton. This version is the most complete version of Barker's film available and has been dubbed The Cabal Cut. Barker was contractually obligated to deliver an R-rated film and could not make it as gory as his previous picture Hellraiser.

The director's cut allows us more time with the creatures and ups their number, emphasizing that they're only fearsome to those afraid of difference. The games were intended to form a trilogy [56] but due to the poor performance of the first two the third was never made. In 1990, to tie in with the film's box office release, Epic Comics produced a four-issue adaptation of the film, which included significant differences from the finished movie, more closely related to Clive Barker's original script. Now that Morgan Creek had agreed to allow a new cut of the movie, they made a deal with Shout Factory to create what would be known as “The Director’s Cut” which came as a 3-disc set limited to 10,000 copies, and the wider release with 2 discs. For a full history of Nightbreed, check out Jose’s feature about Nightbreed that he wrote for the film’s anniversary. I grew up with the butchered theatrical cut (weirdly I prefer the ending in that one) and had the pleasure of watching The Cabal Cut many moons ago, which adds so many extra scenes that it became overstuffed with things that weren't really needed. Kim Robertson and Nina Robertson as Babette, the Nightbreed daughter of Rachel who has the same traits as her. Arrow Films is proud to present two versions of this depraved cult classic: the studio-approved theatrical cut and the reconstructed, reinvigorated director's cut, for the ultimate nightmarish viewing experience.

However, Entertainment Weekly 's Ty Burr gave the film a "B" rating, writing: "From the film's Gothic sets, fantastic makeup, and nightmarish plot line, it's clear that Barker owes as much to Poe and Lovecraft as to classic Hollywood screamers like Island of Lost Souls. Closer to the climax of Nightbreed, there's a new scene in which Rachel picks up Lori in a car to go find Boone, in the hopes he can save Midian. Occupy Midian" was a name thought up by Anne Bobby during an interview with the Clive Barker Podcast. They ended up marketing Nightbreed as a slasher film with television teasers that were confusing and did not represent it.Meanwhile, Captain Eigerman wanders the underground remains of the cemetery where he stumbles upon the transformed Ashberry, who longs for revenge after his burning by Baphomet. Decker ( David Cronenberg) is shown, which more clearly setups their relationship as doctor and patient, and quickly establishes Decker's bad intentions.
