The new Gel Ink Ballpoint Pen bodies and refills are incompatible with previous versions of MUJI Gel Ink Ballpoint Pens which were launched April 2019 or earlier. One of the main criticisms of the Muji gel pen is that the ink takes a long time to dry and that it smudges.But the issues I have with the Muji pen are not annoying enough that it makes me want to go find a new pen. From consistency of color to ink that dries quicker than most, MUJI pens and pencils are designed for a smoother writing experience. I would also say the Muji pen isn’t quite as black compared to the Pentel, however, this is a very slight difference. Show-through or “ghosting” does occur, but this is to be expected with most paper types outside of sketchbooks.

If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag. But if you want to highlight something you’ve written then yes, the Muji ink is probably going to smudge. I would argue that it comes down to minimalistic aesthetic, functionality, and the tactile experience of writing. It’s really all very impressive, making the fact that I hadn’t tried any of it out before now even more surprising. I’ve mentioned the Muji pens a few times in the past and I’ve always felt like I needed to mention that I didn’t find them the most comfortable pen to hold.The friction between the pen and paper causes this scratching sound while also causing the pen to vibrate subtly. If you’ve ever used a Zebra Sarasa Clip, this pen will feel very familiar (in fact, it’s likely that Zebra clandestinely produces this pen for Muji). The slim barrels of the gel pens are very comfortable in the hand, and they fill a specific purpose I have been seeking to fill for some time now. MUJI pens are available in many styles, each designed to be very simple and generous, and therefore loved by many people.

If you look around a classroom of university students, it’s likely you can find a good portion of them using a Muji pen or highlighter.

Otherwise, if you’re looking for a decent gel pen with a spring loaded clip, then it’ll probably be easier to find a Zebra Sarasa Clip instead. Though they all smudged to some extent, the Zebra Sarasa pen was the one with the least amount of smudging.
