Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. It would give anyone a great overview but I think aspects of the book here and there could have been changed. Overall I did like this and it is impressive that almost everything you can think of about art is covered.

There's also odd stuff sprinkled in about how certain ethnicities have different artistic preferences like that "Europeans are obsessed with light" or that "Egyptians have no interest in 3-dimensional representation" which may be true in a broader historical context but was clumsily worded. Identity politics-based quips in a section ostensibly about explaining to the audience the basics of art was unexpected and came across as angry squawking in amongst an otherwise detached presentation which is cleanly carried out through the rest of the book. Comprehensive and chock full of illustrations and detailed explanations of the background and technical aspects of each piece of art (mostly paintings). The book opens with a short section detailing how artists use color, composition, light and shade, perspective, and different media to bring their ideas to fruition. is there any point in a repro of a giant mannerist painting which would have covered half a wall being reduced to a two inch square? But one thing that struck me is this "primitivist" (garbage label, especially to describe a trained artist who "imitates" "primitive" art) who had a 14 year old Tahitian "mistress" who he painted in a sexual way and they didn't pass comment on it at all, just acted as if that's totally ok. Covering subjects as diverse as love, war, work, and children, these beautiful galleries show how attitudes, styles, and techniques change from one era and culture to another. Some choices of representative works were questionable but combined with the little blurb about each artist everything seriously important to know about them is covered. Created in collaboration with Bridgeman, the biggest art library in the world, Art: The Definitive Visual Guide is a must-have for your bookshelf.

For more than 20 years, he has published a weekly column on art, first in the Independent and, more recently, in the Sunday Telegraph. Andrew Graham-Dixon has presented six landmark series on art for the BBC, including the acclaimed A History of British Art, Renaissance and Art of Eternity, as well as numerous individual documentaries on art and artists. It has a mostly objective approach in which each artist is respected while having a slightly contemporary tone through phrasing and word choice. Graphics and overlays explain the simple steps required to analyze, and inform your enjoyment of, any work of art.

He has written a number of books on subjects ranging from medieval painting and sculpture, to contemporary art. I read this on my breaks while at work, took me 11 months and I kinda wrecked the book by the time I was done, cuz it's HEEEAAVVVY and I'm clumsy and my wrists are week thanks to repetitive injury. I felt like I got an education in art history and an introduction to all the art techniques that changed through history.
