About this deal

I've been delighted to enter the world of St Owald's again, although it's a dark and twisted word with a lead character who is totally unforgettable. One year has passed since the events of DIFFERENT CLASS, in which Straitley was forced to confront his past, as that year’s New Head was revealed to be the toxic ex-pupil responsible for one of the darkest episodes of St Oswald’s history. When I first began to read, about a week ago, I quickly realised that I needed to go back to the previous instalment of this intriguing series: Different Class.

This is the kind of smart book that makes you feel smarter while reading it, instead of feeling like it’s talking down to you. Tā ir tā pati skola, kurā mācījās viņas brālis, kurš pazuda bez vēsts, kad Rebekai bija vien 5 gadi. I cannot go into details about the plot because I want you, reader, to experience what I feel was the perfect end to the series. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

Joanne Harris's assured hand leads you into a psychological maze, deeper and deeper into a dark world of emotional complexity and betrayal, where twist follows twist and nothing is what it seems. At first I found this worked well, and it was amusing to follow his struggles to adapt to the ‘new normal’. Harris managed to both romanticize academia, as readers tend to do, and shine a light on its underbelly. Becky is not a traditional feminist; but she is clever enough to understand that the patriarchy is her enemy, and to use whatever weapons she can to turn her gender to advantage. The third book of the Malbry Series, A Narrow Door by Joanne Harris as brilliant as the other two with two differents; can shelf it as a feminist, and although the story is great, but it's a pity that Roy Straitley is a sub-character this time. When on the first day of term, Straitley’s ‘Brodie Boys’ (who now include Benedicta Wild, or ‘Ben’ as she prefers to be known and with the pronoun ‘he’) arrive at his classroom and tell him they think they have found a dead body on the site of the half-finished building site of the new Gunderson Building, Straitley thinks it could just be a practical joke - his ‘Brodie Boys’ are known for their jokes - but when he visits the site himself, he feels his pupils might be right.

Like the previous books, A NARROW DOOR is a kind of chess match between Straitley and his adversary – in this case, the new Head, Rebecca Buckfast. Along with this change is the arrival of the school's first ever female headmaster, Rebecca Buckfast. In each book he has been firmly resisting all that he can but he particularly rejects any suggestions of his retirement.A Narrow Door is a well plotted and clever story of ambition, murder and coming to terms with the past. Whilst not a particular fan of Dark Academia as a genre, I very much enjoyed two of the previous books in this series – Gentlemen and Players and Different Class. Before the school year has even started in earnest, Straitley is approached by his Brodie Boys from his old class, who have made a shocking discovery - the building site appears to have turned up a body.
