About this deal

Strouty I think 20 is too much, in fact 12 is probably as heavy as I would go nobody swings a really heavy sledge anymore.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. I laughed and handed it to my wife (who is much smaller) and she could barely lift it over her shoulder. Excess weight may have two downsides - one is more wear and tear on you the operator, and the other is that you may get lower velocity on your hits - and since energy is mass times velocity squared, a hammer weighing 12 lbs still needs to make at least 81% of the velocity of the 8 lb hammer to get the same "hit" - so you have to swing 50% more weight only 20% slower. If you are a stronger person, someone who does manual labor a lot, and you find that you are breaking stone/concrete or driving post in to permafrost ground, in an area where accuracy is not important, then you might want to increase the weight to get done quicker.

I have looked at lots of sledges, I am pretty set in my decision on the Wilton line, they seem to be built the way I would build a hammer. I can't see any place a 20 lb hammer fits into automotive work unless maybe your working on the 200 ton coal mining dump trucks. Great for driving in stakes, heavy demolition work in construction like fracturing stone and concrete, driving fence posts, rebar work and bending or shaping metal. The size of the head allows additional force to be applied and distributed over a wide area with a variety of head weights available to suit the task at hand.

I think my old ones were a tad light, but I did not weigh them and there was nothing on the head to show weight. As America's leader in industrial workholding equipment and striking tools for more than 80 years, Wilton Tools has a reputation for quality, durability and reliability that is unmatched by any other brand.

This 20 lb sledge hammer has a long handle and a large flat head to deliver powerful blows to concrete, wood and steel. Slamming a 20 lb head of this 25 lb hammer against solid concrete sent no repercussions up my arms whatsoever.
