About this deal

To be honest, I was skeptical, but couldn't help myself, I had to see what the fuss was all about, even though I follow Haig on socials, so I had an idea of what to expect. Some pages are thought provoking, and while most are of interest, a few felt superfluous to me but may be helpful to others. In the toughest moments of their life, people lose the sense of clarity and feel as if there’s no way they’ll be happy again. Publishers have expectations, readers have expectations, and you know from social media exactly how something is going to go down. As we head into what is sure to be the third year of the pandemic (cringe), I know I will be picking up this book more than a few times, if only to be reminded that, “Nothing is stronger than a small hope that doesn’t give up”. We could all use something like that when life gets tough, or when we simply need to pause and show gratitude.

He does do this intentionally with one phrase---"Nothing is stronger than a small hope that doesn't give up. Matt Haig’s The Comfort Book is a short book filled with thoughts, reflections, stories, lists and much more written in simple words that are insightful, thought-provoking and yes, comforting! That’s because you’ll need at leastone that you feel comfortable writing in, highlighting, and tabbing. I’m sure many are comforted by this book, but for me it just felt a bit repetitive and like I’ve heard it all before.

There was no immediate connection between drug-taking and the panic attack, he says – it occurred at 11am and he had not been taking drugs in the preceding period – but he sees the party lifestyle as part of the context of his breakdown. To accept that the unknowability of the future is the key, and that there are versions of that future that are brighter and fairer than the present.

Riefenstahl is portrayed with more sympathy than many readers might expect, or hope, but Farndale’s panoramic view of pre-war German society on the verge of irreparable change is persuasively evoked. The pages are super short, which means you can absorb a few messages, restful with all that white space in between, and close the book for a day. Because, truly, how does one articulate their thoughts about a book that very well altered their perspective on life forever? Haig was drinking too much – a factor in his breakdown – and starting to feel panicky and depressed.

Easter’s journey to understand our evolutionary need to be challenged takes him to meet the NBA’s top exercise scientist, whousesan ancient Japanese practice to build championshipathletes;to themystical country of Bhutan, where an Oxford economist and Buddhist leader are showing the world what death can teach us about happiness; to the outdoor lab of a young neuroscientist who’s foundthat nature tests our physical and mental endurance in ways thatexpand creativity while taming burnout and anxiety; to the remote Alaskan backcountry on a demanding thirty-three-day hunting expedition to experience the rewilding secrets of one of the last rugged places onEarth; and more. This revelatory, illuminating book is packed with big ideas on how our overly comfortable lives and routines have chipped away at our physical, mental, and emotional health.

Do not think that the person who is trying to console you lives effortlessly among the simple, quiet words that sometimes make you feel better…. Easter’s voyage of self-discovery, told via an epic five-week hunting trip in the Alaskan backcountry, steers mercifully clear of evolutionary miracle cures and magical thinking. I’ve still not read it from front to back, though I know I’ve read some passages, especially those on which I’ve placed a dart, many times over. With examples from his real life, The Comfort Book describes what it feels like to be anxious and how life-ruining it is to suffer from depression. But the book’s unpretentiousness will enable its positive message to reach a wide and grateful readership. So, what I didn’t expect was for The Comfort Bookto become so monumentally important to me in the span of 48 hours.
