About this deal

Their proboscis comes in handy for this – while it may look like a straw, it’s actually made up of two tubes which lock together to form the feeding tube. The best I can say being I found myself intrigued with the mysterious elderly woman who, seeming to know many aspects of her life despite the fact they haven't met before, approaches Nina in the London Library. I loved working in publishing so much, and really felt for the first time in my life that when I spoke people understood what I was saying. When holly blue caterpillars are abundant, the wasp thrives and kills so many that the population of the butterfly is driven down.

This is a dark brown butterfly with light brown wing markings, some of which contain black spots with a white centre. One of the biggest threats – and opportunities – facing Britain’s butterflies is the current climate emergency. I'm afraid, especially in its earlier chapters, the characters from the differing eras yet to be established, I found the book confusing, the various strands to the plot unnecessarily convoluted which sadly meant instead of focusing on the story I found myself concentrating overly hard on just where (if anywhere) it was going. This beautifully illustrated field guide covers caterpillars of the moth and butterfly species that are most likely to be encountered in the British Isles. There's a whole secret past that Becky feels on the verge of discovering - starting with friends her mother never mentioned, friends who drop unintentional hints about the father Becky has never met, and ending with the photo she finds of her mother with a baby - dated 12 years before she was born. At the beginning, because it took him a while to enter the scene, I didn't think he would even be nice, but I was proved so so wrong. There were a couple of brilliant plot twists that I didn't see coming but aside from them I'm afraid I found this book a little boring.

While Becky's mother has rather more secrets than I would hope most do, Conway perfectly captures that unsettling feeling of realising that your parents were once young, irresponsible, and did things that you didn't know about, wouldn't have thought they would.

I didn’t know the London Riots were going to be in the book but it was interesting to read about it. I usually enjoy Harriet Evans, but I felt like she was very confused with where she wanted the story to go when she wrote this. Contributing to citizen science projects such as Butterfly Conservation’s Butterflies for the New Millenium, the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, or via the iRecord app are vital to gain a picture of how our butterflies are faring.

I won’t divulge much more but truly Harriet excelled in telling the story of a woman who tried to break free of the conventions and rules placed upon her by Keepsake and her history. He was never too pushy, spiteful, overpowering or demanding, he was just everything Becky needed at that time. It may be beautiful, but there’s bad news: it’s the butterfly you need to protect your cabbages from! And if you’re passionate about nature and the lovely green places that offer wildlife like butterflies a home, do keep an eye on our work around nature and landscapes (and sign up for our newsletter to hear more about what we’re doing to care for these areas!

the “secret” turned into everyone having secrets as though the author didn’t have faith that one would be enough. Nina hears of a woman named Teddy who she apparently looks like, and learns that the mansion from her favourite childhood book is a real place. It was also interesting the way it explored other aspects that were more a secondary aspect of the story like coming of age romance, developing feelings, as part of puberty and growing up in a way. This book does not try to lessen the impact of depression and loss, and weaves them into an incredibly moving and thrilling tale. Adults feed on nectar, and can be seen nectaring on flat, daisy-like blooms as well as plants with long, tubular flowers.Peter Marren, a naturalist whose latest book, Emperors, Admirals and Chimney Sweepers, tells the compelling story of the weird and wonderful names of our butterflies and moths, sounds a note of caution about the recent glut of sightings. The mystery does reveal itself before the end but the satisfaction of reading it and patting yourself on the back, seeing how events have turned out is a lovely reward. Although the crafts and snacks are good, kids need to be active and get outside or even if it’s too hot be active inside incorporate these games and activities into your summer camp at home for bugs and butterflies. For me however, even though the first half I really enjoyed (four stars out of five), I had begun to work out the remaining mysteries myself and found the latter half less exciting.
