About this deal

The distillery features both column stills and pot stills for distillation. Unlike most other Irish whiskeys, which are usually distilled three times, Cooley's products are generally distilled twice, as the third distillation is thought to remove some of the flavour components. Connemara whiskey distillery Hurling legend reveals plans for Connemara whiskey distillery

I’d really like to try a dram of this because I’d read about it before. There’s obviously some novelty value in the only peated Irish whiskey. When not exploring Ireland and finding out its secrets, Conor can usually be found working on his own supernatural novel series. John Teeling bought a former State-owned industrial potato alcohol distillery in 1985. In less than two years, Teeling converted the distillery to have two column stills. In 1998, Cooley received a trophy at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) for outstanding quality, and for earning an impressive reputation over time. Cooley was the first distillery to be awarded the trophy. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819.This malt has been triple distilled and, as well as being created to reflect the landscape of Ireland’s West coast, it’s also a great expression of the long history of Whisky distilling that has gone on before it. That might seem strange. But then consider Connemara, the place. As the people behind Connemara Whiskey well know, it’s a beautiful place situated on the West coast of Ireland, filled with rolling mountains and a glorious seaside that will leave you in awe of your surroundings. Cooley Distillery is an Irish whiskey distillery on the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth, Ireland founded in 1987 and owned by Beam Suntory. A. The absence of maritime notes on the palate does suggest an inland peat source. Could be Irish peat after all… Single malt Irish whiskeyproduced from peated barley and is a blend of 4, 6, and 8-year-old whiskies. I suppose the 12 yrs in the cask took away alot of the fiery and full flavour as one find in all the other Connemara whiskeys. If you are a peat fan and love the turf/smoke/tar explosion in your mouth this is not the whsikey for you. However if you appreciate a mild turf experience this could be the one for you. The Tyrconnell – a single malt whiskey, The Tyrconnell was acquired as a brand by Cooley in 1988 after being dormant since 1925, when the old Watt's Distillery (the original producers of The Tyrconnell) closed. [13] The Connolly family told the Connacht Tribune that they viewed the Cnoc Buí facility as “an asset which will enrich the entire community”.

Whisky reviews for Connemara Peated Single Malt

The building has been carefully designed to reflect the beauty of its surroundings because we want our distillery to be an attractive hub, with its Visitors’ Centre and Tasting Bar. Finish: Long. Vanilla. Earthy, meaty peat finally, with notes of roasted mushrooms and tofu. Mild, cake-dough cereal note. No bitterness. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. The plans describe a top-of-the-range distillery that offers a first-class visitor experience with bonded warehousing, a tasting bar, a bottling hall, a heritage centre, and a shop and café. Birdsall, Ben(2018): The Distilleries of Ireland by Vespa, Wittenborg University Press, The Netherlands. ISBN 978-94-93066-00-7I must say I was very skeptical about this whiskey, as it is now a "supermarket whiskey" for a reasonable price. But he really convinced me for the price. Nice soft and fruity and above all pleasant smoke. I honestly can not think of a single malt that has a similar PLV. It will provide employment, draw in tourists and add value to other businesses in the area,” Connolly explained to the Connacht Tribune. The plans that Joe Connolly revealed are for creating a multi-million-euro whiskey distillery and heritage centre. It will be called the Cnoc Buí Whiskey Distillery & Heritage Centre and will be located just outside Carna in County Galway. Overall: Not in the same category as peated Islay malts in this price range, which have depth of flavor and complexity beyond what this Connemara can reach. Still, it is an interesting take on a peated single malt, and is well-crafted without bitterness or off-notes. Notable for its individuality among the Irish category, but not something that your average malt-head will choose over an Islay malt like Lagavulin 16, Laphroaig 10, or Caol Ila 12.

Palate: Sweet, fizzy almost, with rustic, earthy peat, atop rhubarb and custard sweets, cream, malt and granary toast with melted butter. Smoky too, like a driftwood on fire. The distillery will create more than 30 jobs in its first five years. Furthermore, the heritage centre hopes to attract up to 16,000 visitors in its first year. It’s expected to have 52,000 visitors per year after five years. With Water: A few drops of water intensifies the cucumber note, and adds a thin layer of vanilla sweetness to the palate. Water doesn’t hurt here. Nose: Green, vegetal peat. This is just how I imagine smoked cucumber would smell, if such a thing existed. The peat smells like it was composed entirely of green leafy things decomposed in inland bogs (no sea notes). Lime peel. Watery. Beam completes acquisition of Cooley Distillery".
