The handle is constructed from one single piece of steel, allowing for additional strength in a slimmer design The handles, when extended into ideal driver use position, are similar in comfort. See images of the drivers to see the ideal driver-use position. The Gerber Truss is an all-inclusive multi-tool, with 17 tools built to the exacting needs of the professional user in a size-conscious design. This full size multi-tool aims to remove excess heft while keeping all of the functionality. The result is a professional-grade multi-tool that bridges the gap between the problem and the solution. This device is manufactured in such a way that it can get the most intricate of tasks done. But getting intricate tasks done is easy; the issue that usually arrives is that some multi tools can be difficult to use. With various compartments and sliding options for the tools, it can be a hassle to figure out the dynamics of it. The MP600 is without a doubt one of the most widely used multi tools in the world. This is due in no small part to its status as the standard issue multi tool of the U.S. military. It’s a big, heavy duty tool that’s designed to stand up to extreme conditions without complaint. Gerber went with a significantly different design for the MP600 than Leatherman did for the Wave+. The pliers are the needle nose variety with an inner flat section that acts like standard pliers then a bolt/nut gripper section. Add wire cutters and a wire stripper to the plier functions. That’s fairly standard fare for multi-tool plier functions. Some multi-tools will add electrical wire crimpers as well but not a major omission for most people. The pliers, with their removable wire cutters, were a revelation. Having faced the annoyance of a small divot in my Curl’s cutters, the replaceable feature on the Wave Plus was nothing short of a blessing. The wire crimper just below the hinge of the plier handles proved to be a nifty addition, making wire crimping tasks a breeze.

We think Gerber beats out Leatherman in this category. Folding knives are the companies bread and butter, they’re just more experienced that Leatherman and produced an overall better product. The Gerber Obsidian product picture Leatherman wins here as well. The Wingman is only marginally more expensive than the Gerber Suspension but it feels like a much nicer multi tool. The Leatherman Wingman product picture I like that the Truss has both a separate straight edge blade and a serrated blade. It’s good to have both rather than a combo half/half blade and both are 2.25 inches long (5.7 cms). That’s OK but for a full-size multi-tool isn’t very long. Gerber’s own Center Drive has a 3 inch (7.5 cm) blade as a comparison. The smaller Suspension-NXT weighs even less, advertised at under 6.5 ounces. Its updated features are the same as the Truss’, yet it’s longer and has three more functions than the 12-function Suspension.Next we’ll look at the Leatherman Squirt PS4. The Squirt and the Dime have very similar tool loadouts. The Dime does beat out the Squirt with its inclusion of tweezers and a useful little box cutter. One thing we really like about the Dime when compared to the Squirt are the removable torx bolts instead of rivets used in its construction. It’s a small thing, but we like being able to take apart our tools for regular cleanings. Overall the Gerber Dime just beats out the Squirt PS4. They’re both great multi tools, but the Dime has slightly better tools and overall design. The Leatherman Squirt product picture Truss and Suspension Scissors. The Truss adds a thumb-pad on the scissor handle. A much welcomed addition. Same scissor platform on both. This is one of Gerber’s 2 recently released multi-tools – the Truss. It’s marketed as a full-size but compact and lightweight professional-grade multi-tool. There are standard models with non removable tools, needlenose pliers, bluntnose, straight blade or serrated, the list goes one. Gerber even has versions designed specifically for combat engineers performing demolitions work.

Multi tools are known for their flexibility, dependability and large capacity. It doesn’t make a difference in case you’re out in forested areas or utilizing it for ordinary convey; you need a multi-instrument close by. As much as I love collecting specialized tools, there are times when a good multitool is right for the job. Maybe that time comes on an aircraft or walking patrol when lugging around a bunch of full-sized tools isn’t realistic. Maybe it’s when you’re suffering your ass off in the attic getting dominated by 50-year-old insulation. I used the Truss for all kinds of odd jobs around the house and garage, but never was it more of a life-saver than when I had to sort out faulty wiring in a ceiling light. Bracing my knees on joists above old plaster and holding up sheets of horrendously itchy insulation with one hand, I was glad to have screwdrivers, pliers, and wire cutters at my fingertips. The Truss was a huge help up there. The Gerber Crucial uses a more classic design but does some weird things with its shape. There aren’t any straight lines to be found on the Crucial, something that makes getting a firm grip difficult. Gerber chose to put standard phillips and flathead screwdrivers on the Crucial, another mark against it. It’s half an inch shorter overall than the Skeletool but we honestly think Gerber really compromised its overall usefulness to achieve this. That brings me to the name. If there’s a connection here, maybe Gerber can make it more clear because it seems rather arbitrary. Again, these are personal complaints and you may disagree. If you do, go ahead and snatch one of these up because the Truss is still a useful tool and a considerable bargain. VerdictThe entirety of the apparatuses inside the handle will naturally secure set up, limiting the number of wounds that would return from devices collapsing over onto your fingers.
