About this deal

The messages in On Connection are often vague or trite, or both. Tempest talks about putting down our phones and paying attention to the world around us, the dangers of social media, the tragedy of placing monetary value above other types of value, numbness, avoidance - all interesting and relevant topics - but they present no new insights. They start down multiple different paths, none of which lead anywhere. The solutions Tempest offers (be creative, take note of your behavior, etc.) are so vague that I'm not sure I would call them solutions at all. I tried multiple times to give people a general idea of what this book is about, and I failed every time. In 2013, aged 28, they won the Ted Hughes Award for their work Brand New Ancients, the first person under the age of 40 to win the award, [37] and was selected as one of the 2014 Next Generation Poets by the Poetry Society. [38] i read amanda palmer's art of asking in my second year of university, & it helped me when i was trying to form a framework for thinking about mutuality & vulnerability & performance, it gave me new ideas to use in the ongoing process of ! trying to make sense of what i wanted for myself ! & because i read it because i liked amanda palmer's music, & the messy loudness of her public persona, it felt meaningful to me, to trace out my own emerging thoughts & feelings in the pattern of someone that interested & excited me. i'll never retract my original thoughts on that book, but since then i've consciously parted ways with her as a performer & a persona -- i have no interest in re-reading it & have become much more sceptical abt both it & her. Honest, hopeful and written with piercing clarity, On Connection is an inspiring personal meditation that will transform the way you see the world.

In October 2014, their first poetry collection for Picador, Hold Your Own, was published. The collection was a commercial and critical success and its release coincided with Tempest being named a Next Generation Poet. They take a minute. Sharing stories from their past, Tempest explains, isn’t easy. “Until hitting puberty, I lived as a boy,” they say. “People around me would say: ‘You’re a tomboy, you’ll grow out of it.’ I internalised that, and hoped I would.” That never happened. “Puberty was disorientating. It brought a lot of pain to me.” They have a command of language and rhythm that makes you listen; makes you care about what they have to say.

Tempest has an excited energy when recounting each passion project and career high. But when it comes to discussing more personal topics during our interview, they cut themselves off – lots of pensive staring. Music wasn’t just an escape for Tempest, it also shifted people’s attention away from their body. “When I had rapping and lyricism,” says Tempest, “ that’s what I was. Everything else disappeared. I almost left my body behind, and became an artist.” But Tempest isn’t talking about merely missing a good night out at a gig or show. On Connection looks at creativity as a means of counteracting the numbness of the modern world. We get so caught up in an ever-spinning consumerist hamster wheel that we neglect what is true within ourselves and one another. “In a disconnected state, self-awareness is one of the first frequencies to be scooped out and muted,” they write. “When this happens, I need creativity to reconnect me.” Anyone who has seen Tempest live has likely witnessed their talent for sparking connectionNu lijkt het alsof ik bovenstaande levenshouding (die ongetwijfeld sporen van Zenboeddhisme, Stoïcisme en mindfulness bevat) ten gronde beheers. Tempest began writing and performing their unique blend of spoken word poetry and hip hop at 16, starting with open mic nights at Deal Real, the famed hip hop record store. Since then, they've produced six poetry collections, five studio albums, four plays, a novel, and a non-fiction book, and won a number of awards, including the prestigious Ted Hughes Prize for poetry. For the last couple of records,” they say, “I wanted to disappear completely from the front-facing aspects of the industry.” There was a genuine desire to let the work speak for itself; constantly grappling with the fact that as a writer their output was enough, yet putting out music meant being public-facing. “But this time, I want to be different.” Facebook TV Commercial, 'We're Never Lost If We Can Find Each Other' Song by Kate Tempest". iSpot.tv . Retrieved 9 April 2020. Brennan, Clare (23 September 2013). "Hopelessly Devoted – review – Stage – The Guardian". The Guardian . Retrieved 6 February 2018.I have the impulse of doing the same with "On Connection". Carry it with me, correlate its values with my life, really work through it. I probably can't and won't carry it around with me everywhere (can I tho) but I for sure will read it again and again. It already had a very real impact on my life and I'm curious to see where it leads me.
