About this deal

Read this book in a couple of days - very short chapters - I love that in a book as it means I can pick it up and read a chapter whenever I have a spare couple of mins. Characters are also described through the views of other characters and not by internal thought or third person view (which also switches from one character to the other through the same chapter). I always like reading Cole’s books as sometimes you just need to sit back and read without engaging brain so much and let her take you on a journey.

Byla tak bezmocná a ve všem na vás závisela - bylo to jediné období Reevinho života, kdy si připadala chtěná. It was easy listening but pretty predictable, and I got sick of all the swearing (not all of it was necessary).I loved Cole's earlier books, particularly Burrows and the whole taboo of a copper hooking up with a criminal. It soon becomes clear the killer is on their doorstep and as the body count grows, Kate and Annie face a race against the clock.

Martina Cole has always been an author who doesn’t shy away from the horrors of real life and tackles subjects head on. You have loyalty, violence, family, relationships, sex, swearing, murder, drugs, prostitution and warning, even child abuse within this one. There's ever a scene where characters discuss what film is better: Goodfellas or The Godfather (does every gangster-type story have this conversation in?The actual reveal is comical beyond belief and it simply felt as though Martina had run out of any ideas on how to actually finish the book. I'd admittedly be dubious about reading anything by Cole again, whilst 'The Family' was a very good story, the content was too thin for my liking, and I found the short and choppy chapter format a bit irritating at times. The novels written by her have successfully achieved the sale of more than 10 million in the United Kingdom alone. Aiden the eldest Son, head of the family who's word goes as he runs the firm and his Wife the rock by his side Jade who knows him inside out, watches his back and who is respected in the corrupt goings on. Keep your friends close, your enemies closer and your family close of all, because betrayal comes in all shape and sizes.

It was obvious from the beginning that someone in the family would kill Aiden and I thought it would be Jade Dixon. As with Cole’s previous books, the chapters are fairly short and the style and flow of writing is easy to follow but it’s really just the same old stories and characters. If Annie was a real life detective I would be terrified to be living in the city that she had some control over. This is the first time I've read anything by Martina Cole, and I found myself quickly sucked into what is a very compelling story about gangsters in the East End.

That update was last posted in July 2020 on her social media so not sure the status of that or her unfortunately. A perplexing story which was perplexing until it was solved- just like that - the denouement happens on a single page then it ended. And also some of her novels take place within the community of the Irishmen situated in and around the city of London. Example - every time Pat Kelly meets up with Danny “boy” we’re told how much Danny looks up to Pat an how he’s old school, around 10 times maybe more.

I so wanted to love this book, as I have loved every one of Cole's books I've read but this was so badly written I actually found myself doubting whether she had even penned it herself.I would have liked two aspects of the story to have a lot more exploration but I cannot go into them without potential spoilers and I never do spoiler reviews. I didn't like how interchangeable some of the characters became, they start off with strict principles but fast forward X amount of time later and they have a complete switch. Using nearly every character to drum that point in makes me start to wonder if it is all a conspiracy. Although not as compelling as your typical Cole read, it's an interesting viewpoint to look at the rise and rise of a violent crime family from the viewpoint of an 'ordinary' woman, and the impact of such a lifestyle. Aiden O'Hara is the oldest, loves his mum but knows she attracts the wrong sort of guys so he has to watch over his family.
