About this deal

I used to check this out regularly from my small-town public library back in middle and high school; I loved it because the library's innocuous cover meant my parents had no idea that I was reading something so (to use their word) sinful. He later became an interior decorator and worked to decorate actress Carole Lombard’s house and they became good friends. When, in many cases, actual facts are widely available, Anger ignores them in favor of titillating conjecture. A longing for the "good old days", even though defining its goodness seemed quite the task for most.

The challenging job was to make sure that studio stars conformed to a strict image of morality is highest. The sequel to my 2013 naughty cruise read for my 2014 cruise :) More of the best in Old Hollywood gossip, in Anger's inimitable style. It turned out that when Clark Gable was still a bit player at MGM, he had let himself blow-serviced by Haines and seek his help to further his career at MGM. It might be to avoid claims of libel or slander (such as a chapter about gay movie stars; he never once SAYS Cary Grant is gay, but shows a half dozen photos of Cary and a close male friend in that chapter, leaving the reader to draw the obvious conclusion), but it’s also part of the aesthetic unity of this book.

In “Roman Scandals” made for Goldwyn in 1933, director Busby Berkley (Buzz), the undisputed genius of the Hollywood musical shot a scene with completely nude women who were wearing long chains and blonde wigs which fell down to their snatches. All used books might have various degrees of writing, highliting and wear and tear and possibly be an ex-library with the usual stickers and stamps. I heard that all of the stars from the silent era didn't sound like Danny Kaye before his voice broke, not this shit about the kissing disease and they all lost their voice en masse. Joe also had eyes for beautiful females in Hollywood that led to a sensual relationship with actress Gloria Swanson. Experimental filmmaker, Kenneth Anger details the sordid rumors of old Hollywood in a convoluted mess of glamorization and finger pointing.

After all, the almighty dollar and commercial considerations utterly ruled the land, and if it turned out you couldn’t cut it, you had no business being there in the first place. In sum, the book is no longer the "luscious plum of sizzling scandal" it once was, and Anger's tabloid naughtiness has dated badly. Et sur le dernier tiers, consacré aux suicides, on dirait parfois une rubrique nécrologique avec 2 lignes de texte, parfois une photo, et la date de la mort. And of course it is effulgent of imagery, much of it disturbing and capturing the banal reality of death in a land of happy dreams. I will read the "coffee table" edition someday, but for the time being this is satisfying enough, and truer to its form.

Spine is a tad sunfaded and the red has become pink with title still bold but author name has all but disappeared.

It begins in 1915, a convenient place to begin a history of the scandals of Hollywood, though the film business had already been around for almost a generation, and scandals and censorship battles had already become a part of it, as does anything touched by humans. But don’t worry, ghoulish gossipmongering still abounds, especially in an encyclopedic stretch of about 60 pages wherein Anger lists every celebrity he can find who ended their own life (and how). This book about the earlier stars and studios was originally published, long ago, in French in Paris. There's still a lot of great information and awesome photos, but the meat of the book is considerably weaker than the original Holly Baby. And hereafter, Anger's book becomes a litany of the notorious: the drug death of Wallace Reid, the rape and manslaughter trial of Fatty Arbuckle and so forth. The book's famous cover perfectly captures its attitude: the Hollywood glamor image self destructing before our eyes in Jayne Mansfield's overpainted face and saggy tits.
