About this deal

Thank you to Poisoned Pen Press, Dreamscape Media and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own. I’m kind of feeling like pregnancy thrillers are saturating the market right now. I seem to be avoiding them when I can. If you’re going to write a thriller about a pregnant woman, you need to change it up and make it original. I think this book accomplished that. It's best not to watch this piece of trash, but for masochists and fans of misinformation one can do much worse. No, actually not... Worse? Not really.

When one terrible night things go pear-shaped in a big way, the press go after Alex in a big way, blaming her for what has happened. As they do! They are out to sensationalise it all and Alex has to hide away at the rectory hoping it will quieten down soon. And she has put herself in a very compromising place. Go Alex! The last trimester, however, was not as great to me. The pacing slowed to a snails pace and I felt that some of the chapters were telling me the same thing over and over with nothing happening. The ending was the real bummer and I felt like it was rushed - as the ending didn't start until the last chapter or so of the book. Which would have been fine if I felt satisfied with it but unfortunately it just kind of fizzled out. This novel is marketed as horror. I don’t necessarily agree with that notion. There were creepy moments sure, but nothing that would keep me up at night. I want gore. I want jump scares. I wanted more!

I will start by saying that I liked the writing style a lot - it is really detailed and depicting not just the overall picture, but every element of it that would help the reader to imagine the setting as if the reader were there, as well as to get to know the characters and their story from the very beginning, without it looking out of place and like too much. Following the Children’s Society report on the growing problem of child prostitution in Britain’s cities, legislation to ease prosecution and increase prison sentences for pimps and child abusers is on its way.In addition to Essie's perspective, we also get a historical perspective following two women, Isabelle and Anna. I enjoyed the writing and I will definitely read more by this author. This story just didn’t quite resonate with me the way I was anticipating. Her relationship with Jason...her older boyfriend...is complicated. Her work is complicated and just gets even more complicated throughout this book. Thank you to the publishers at Poisoned Pen Press and Netgalley for this e-ARC of No Child of Mine.

This was an okay read for me, I liked the dual timeline and how the stories came together in the end, the haunted house aspect and the writing style was good. What I missed was the suspense, I think you could have made the house so much creepier if that had been more majorly a focus, it was very much just a side storyline in this. The past timeline remained very surface-level, I didn't love the letters and I don't think you really got to know the characters there. All while this struggle is happening, another narrative keeps popping in. It’s from centuries ago, and tells of the strife of women and family before our liberation. I had a hard time figuring out where this played into the main story, until they merged in a very creepy supernatural way. From that point the book goes in another direction and becomes a ghost story mashup. I was totally all in at this point.

As Essie's pregnancy progresses, both her and Sanjay's lives are warped by a curse that has haunted her family for generations, leaving a string of fatherless daughters in its wake. When she's put on bedrest, Essie trades the last aspects of her carefully planned life for isolation in what should be a welcoming home, but she isn't alone. There's something here that means to take everything from her… I am glad that the author put in so much detail about the abuse and what was happening. A lot of other reviewers complained about this but I do think it was important to really get a picture of what was going on. Like I said before it would not have seemed as real if she left out the details. There are bad things that happen in the world, not everything is roses everyday for everyone! If you want pretty - read a Romance.

As a retired child welfare social worker, I don't often read social worker stories, but I'm always interested in child protection practice in other counties, here the UK. It has a potentially interesting plot line, but it's way too long and repetitive. Ms. Lewis could have used a good editor. Meeting with the family, Alex’s instincts where telling her that the child is in danger, but how is she going to prove it? Will she be able to save the child or would be too late?Initially, I was wondering if there was any connection between Isabel, Anna and Essie. Later on, it is revealed that the three women are connected by a generational curse that sees their husbands stolen from them. What this book needed was Sanjay's POV, because the slow-burn story with Essie's POV was not working for me. I would have removed most of the interrupting chapters from Ana and Isabel, which are a past narrative and most of their history is not required, and add Sanjay's POV. Maybe to show his change of emotion or show what was changing his personality. The reason I say this is because it wasn't shown vividly enough through Essie's POV. The observations weren't strong enough. Maybe it was written this way to add intrigue and suspense. But Essie's reactions were strong enough to add the suspense I needed.
