About this deal

Frank didn’t believe in fighting, and that was one of the many reasons why Jack had some misplaced contempt for his brother. Jack is skating right out there with them on ice that's even thinner, given that Jack is also conducting a clandestine affair with Gerald's wife, Audrey.

In October 2010 the critics from The Guardian newspaper placed the film on their list of "Greatest Films of All Time", placing it at number 7 in the 25 greatest crime films. In 2012, the theme was included on the Soul Jazz Records compilation British TV, Film and Library Composers. Its merit is in its raw, uncompromising and frankly unpleasant portrait of the underworld: protection rackets, gambling, prostitution, drugs, money laundering. He had a strict upbringing and his parents did not want their son to go to art school, but Ted's English teacher Henry Treece, recognising his creative talents in writing and art, persuaded them not to stand in his way.Considering how memorable the movie was, you would think a guy like me would have wanted to explore the origins of the plot. Bob Graham of the San Francisco Chronicle said the film "is murkier than it needs to be, through no fault of Stallone's". In the process of redubbing the opening, the version of the film with the original dialogue was lost. One of the many feelings I had after finishing Nick Triplow’s superb account of the life and writing of Ted Lewis was that it was all such a long time ago. Hard-edged late 1960s crime drama following London gangster Jack's frenetic investigation into his brother's death 'up North'.

The crucial decade from 1970 to 1980 just seems – and there is no other phrase that fits – like another country. Klinger was worried that the debut director might be overwhelmed with too many options, but Hodges said he and Atkinson got on very well. What Ted Lewis achieves brilliantly, in common with all great genre fiction, is to say something else about the world. Born in Manchester in 1940, he grew up in the tough environs of postwar Humberside, attending Hull Art School before heading to London. Ted Lewis also skewers that ambiguous strata of society where criminality and respectability combine.Jack has sex with Glenda at her flat, where he finds and watches a pornographic film in which Doreen is forced to have sex with Albert. In contrast, Nigel Andrews found the characters to be clichéd archetypes of the criminal underworld, such as the "homosexual chauffeur, bloated tycoon, glamorous mistress", describing the film as "perfunctory".

On its general release in the North of England, Chibnall notes it had a "very strong first week", before an unseasonal heatwave damaged cinema attendance. Many believed the crime was part of a failed attempt by the Kray twins to gain control of the Newcastle underworld. Disc 2 combines other incidental music from the film with single mixes and remixes and other rarities. The comparison rests solely on the stated purpose of noir to take crime out of the cosy saloons of the wealthy and put it back on the mean streets. Can’t say more without spoiling it but this is still well worth a read and very evocative of 1960s gangland life. After many years of separation, a middle-aged Jack is finally coming back home, driven by a cold-blooded rage.
