About this deal

The Revo SuperSystem sound quality is so compelling that it makes the machine one of the top-performing all-in-one systems on the market. There is a chunky plastic remote but the best way to wield and juggle all of these sources is via the app. There is no official app, but Revo uses the free Undok app to great effect.

Like the R5, the R7 has an internet tuner, so you can listen to thousands of stations from around the world using WiFi. For the ultimate in convenience, the Revo SuperCD comes with high quality Bluetooth APTX connectivity. Connect up to your compatible phone, tablet, laptop or PC and you'll be able to wirelessly stream your stored music and music streaming services. This high quality version of Bluetooth also ensures the sound quality is closer to a wired connection than ever. The remote control has three large preset buttons, which are available separately for each source, so three for FM, three for DAB+, three for internet radio. You store them by simply pressing and holding the button when listening to a station. What makes this Revo extra special is the built-in CD player. This lets you play all your existing CDs while still having access to the latest streaming functions, plus much more. The CD player is compatible with a wide range of formats, including CDR and CDRW.

Performance with streamed audio

The 40W class D amplifier used and the two 3.5″ BMR speakers (balanced mode radiator) ensure room-filling digital audio rich in bass, clarity and details with an extensive sound field. Wirelessly stream music to superconnect from a wide variety of Bluetooth® enabled devices including smartphones, tablets and laptops. Of more interest is how the Revo converts these signals to sound. The SuperSystem is built around a pair of 3 inch BMR drivers that fire forwards. BMR is an acronym for Balanced Mode Radiator and this is something that Revo has been working on for a little while. Technically, a BMR is two drivers in one. The front of it is a panel section that produces high frequency signals by passing an electrical current across the panel section exciting it to produce soundwaves. This is then augmented by mounting the panel on a conventional pistonic mount that allows it to produce far more bass than would be the case. The Revo SuperSystem is the flagship of the Revo range which is focussed on compact single chassis devices that are intended to be used as standalone systems. What sets the Revo apart from many of its rivals is that is equipped with a specification that goes a long way to justifying the use the word 'Super' in the title. The SuperSystem is able to offer a range of functionality that should allow it to take on a number of roles in a household.

Cutting-edge sound modelling techniques have been used to design SuperCD’s award-winng sound profile. In tandem with our custom hardware design, SuperCD’s proprietary EQ configuration develops a warm open sound with clarity, detail and deep rich bass – free from coloration and distortion and benefiting from an expansive sound field. We hastened to the tone controls through the menus. There are four elements to the tone controls: bass and treble adjustment, a loudness option which was ‘on’ by default, and – ah! – a ‘3D’ option. This 3D option was also on by default. Switching it off went a long way to removing the artificial spittiness from the radio sources.

The only real issue with this machine is that it’s probably too big for a smaller room, as it would fill up too much space. The Revo belongs to a category of units that have existed for some years but have become increasingly big business over the last five or six. Traditionally, these systems were (and indeed many still are), CD based designs with a DAB/FM radio supporting it and a selection of outputs and inputs intended to allow a limited bit of system building to be attempted. The Revo doesn't completely dispense with this concept but it does revise it somewhat.
