About this deal

The MeacoCool MC Series 7000 has an energy rating of A and maximum power consumption is quoted at 780W. We didn’t see power draw reach that level, though. The 10000 CH has five modes: cool, fan, dry, heat and sleep. We’ve added a timer so that you can get your room to the right temperature before you need to use it – perfect for bedrooms and offices, but also great for making sure your reception rooms or conservatory is the right temperature before you get home after a long day. The first item of note is how easy this model is to use. There are no unfathomable icons to get your head around because all controls on top of the unit are written in plain English. Starting on the left there’s a timer, followed by a Speed button: the Low setting is surprisingly quiet; Medium produces more clout without excessive noise and High belts out a mini gale that thankfully still isn’t loud enough to irritate. Installing the window kit for the first time takes a little time and effort, but once this is done it can be kept in situ for the whole summer. The neatest but most expensive option is to have a hole punched through the room’s wall and a good sealing cap fitted to close the gap when you’re not using any air-con. But there is another way, though unfortunately it only applies to houses fitted with a working fireplace chimney. You see, the humble chimney was designed to port hot smoke out of the house, and it works brilliantly with air conditioners, too.

MeacoCool 10,000BTU portable air conditioner for use in the home or the office to provide personal cooling in rooms of around 28m². The reverse Heat Pump allows you to use this unit for heating as well making it useful all year round. Designed to keep your home and office cool during the hottest months of the year, our air conditioners are designed to be fully portable so that you can use them anywhere in your home or office.Like all air con units, when in Cool Mode the air duct needs to be positioned out of the window so you’ll just need to make sure it’s positioned close enough to a window to do this. For added convenience, the whole shebang can also be operated using the supplied remote control which mirrors the controls on the unit. The unit is small and light enough to manhandle from room to room, too, and small casters attached to the base make it easy to manoeuvre on hard floors. If you have carpet, however, you’ll have to lift it. MeacoCool MC 7000: How well does it cool?

It's not the most powerful option out there in terms of BTU, but Meaco offers plenty of alternative models, ranging from this the smallest 7000BTU through to a 14000BTU model. The Sleep Mode keeps the unit in low fan speed to ensure the lowest possible noise level, you can combine this with the Off Timer to ensure that you do not wake up cold during the night. Basic physics dictates that portable air conditioners must be quite large, a bit noisy and not the prettiest appliances to have in the household. At 76.2cm in height, 47cm in width and 35.3cm in depth, the MeacoCool MC Series 14000 occupies the upper level of largeness. The MeacoCool MC 7000, for instance, delivers full air-conditioning capabilities for less than the cost of a Dyson desk fan like the Pure Cool Me. It isn’t the quietest thing in the world but it’s a lot more effective at keeping you cool than a simple air blower. The big advantage of the MeacoCool range is its smaller, lighter and a more compact size. This means you can easily put it in rooms of all sizes, and to move it from space to space. We’ve also added a timer. This allows you to set the air conditioner to operate for anytime between one and 24 hours, so you can set it to come on for an hour before you go to bed, or before you get home in the evening, resulting in rooms that are the perfect temperature when you need them.

Models with the heating function can be used in the winter months to provide warmth and comfort making them great investments that can be used all year long. To get the best out of your air conditioner we recommend pre-cooling your rooms – particularly bedrooms – before you need to use them. This means that your room is the right temperature, making it easier to work, sleep and live. Alas, the weather hasn’t been particularly warm during the test period so I can’t give more accurate details than this yet, but it’s a good sign that the unit managed to keep rooms cool even without the installation of a window kit. It’s also – relative to most air conditioning units – a very affordable option, and delivers reliable cooling performance. Also in the box is a short pipe for draining moisture from the water collection tank and a small remote control. The latter allows you to turn the unit on and off, adjust the fan speed and temperature, switch modes and set the on/off timer. These controls are mirrored on the panel at the front of the air conditioner, along with a simple LED screen that indicates the target temperature.

A cost-effective air conditioner that works brilliantly – but it’s a little on the noisy side

When in Cool Mode on High setting, and with the temperature set as 16, it brought the temperature down by approximately two degree Celsius in a super speedy ten minutes. (This was with the thermometer positioned at the side of the room close to the unit). A really immediate and noticeable impact. At just 20.5kgs in weight, this is one of the lighter air conditioning units I've tested which makes it much easier to transport around the house.
