About this deal

Her long-lasting unrequited (mostly) love for her friend Ed, and her heartbreak at his sudden engagement felt relatable. These friendships were very old, and the characters felt like real people, who made and owned real mistakes. There is an underlying question whether old friendships represent security blankets or stagnation, or both at the same time. This shift would have helped the book feel deeper to me, though I see why others appreciate it as is.

Really I would class this more as women's fiction, and it is certainly McFarlane's heaviest hitting and most emotional book to date.

She kept just enough humor in her outlook on life as she faced hard realities that I was able to bear the sadness and hurt that peppers this story. You can also use the "Read Saving" feature to save your progress in a book you're currently reading.

Despite the humor and the fun in this story, Here’s Looking at You is a story that deals with the theme of bullying and its effects something that every person has experienced at one point in their lives. As Eve struggles to adapt to life without Susie—and contends with the sudden presence of Susie’s estranged brother, the gorgeous but gloomy Finlay, in her life—she discovers that Susie and their dear friend Ed Cooper were keeping a secret from her. At its heart this book is about friendship, and I loved how McFarlane explores these 4 characters and there friendship over the years, with the ups and downs. I couldn't shake the conflicted feelings I had when first reading this early scene immediately before tragedy strikes. One, letting loose at the individual winding you up, or two, bitching mercilessly behind their back. I felt like we had only just begun to see a glimpse of the romantic potential, and then the book wrapped up! Eve, Justin, Susie, and Ed have been best friends since they were in school and are now navigating their thirties together, still as closer as ever.

But, unlike 'If I Never Met You' which was based on a fauxmance this was essentially a heartbreaking story of friendship and loss (with a little bit of love obviously). I liked several things about it: Eve is a flawed yet honest and relatable protagonist, Mhairi McFarlane’s writing flows well and is easy to read, and Eve’s grows in meaningful ways through the duration of the novel. But that said it was still essentially a light-hearted read with the author blending her wit and empathy seamlessly. I'm here for the wit, the biting truthbombs, and the friendships, but sometimes I'm not sold on the romance. This did not disappoint at all, once again her Characters are wonderful, people you would love to know yourself ( and def go to a pub quiz with), her clever, witty, insightful writing has such a depth of feeling that it leaves you wanting more from her straight away and it feels such a long long time to wait until her next book.As much of a mean girl as Hester is, I had moments of sympathy for even her, despite her otherwise unpleasantness, given the closed circle she's trying to infiltrate. But then one night changes everything (not an affair, I don’t mean an affair), and suddenly it’s as if Eve doesn’t really know her friends after all. This is a lucky escape for Hester, as Ed, Eve and their minor character friend Justin have ridiculed her through the entire book. And I don't want to give anything away, and spoiler-tagging wouldn't really be adequate (it'd be either too much or too little). That descriptor pretty much only applies to dictators in banana republics, serial killers, and PE teachers.

The group are really tight, and yet as the book goes on, Eve discovers that she doesn't necessarily know her friends quite as well as she thought, with secrets coming out. You Had Me at Hello prologue is brilliantly done, but the opening chapter of the story is brilliant. This is a beautifully written and enchanting read, it's not often I say this, but I liked almost every character with one of the exceptions being Susie's dementia suffering father after what is revealed near the end of the book.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Not only did she lose one of the people she loved most in the world but to discover that that person was hiding something big from you only complicates matters. If The Event hadn't happened, it's not hard to imagine Eve, Suzie, Ed, and Justin sluggishly gathering for pub night into eternity. And when someone from the past comes back into her life, Eve’s future veers in a surprising new direction.
