About this deal

She presided over Crowley’s initiation to the degree of Ipsissimus, and herself claimed the degree of Magister Templi. So even though Crowley exerts a pull to this day, and not only on the credulous, I had only a mild curiosity about this book to start with.

In 1920, the Swiss-American music teacher and occultist Leah Hirsig (1883–1975) was appointed ‘Scarlet Woman’ by the British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), founder of the religion Thelema. At the Abbey, Hirsig was instrumental in guiding Crowley, the Prophet of the New Aeon, to a deeper understanding of the Law of Thelema. The study analyzes constructions of femininity and feminine sexuality in interpretations of the goddess Babalon, a central deity in the British occultist Aleister Crowley’s (1875–1947) religion Thelema.Abstract In 1920, the Swiss-American music teacher and occultist Leah Hirsig (1883–1975) was appointed ‘Scarlet Woman’ by the British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), founder of the religion Thelema.

Leah Hirsig (1883-1975) was one of the most prominent women in the life of British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875-1947). Born on April 9, 1883 in Trachselwald, Switzerland, Leah grew up with her mother and five sisters in NYC from age 2. At a time of despair, Crowley wrote, “What really pulled me from the pit was the courage, wisdom, understanding and divine enlightenment of the Ape herself. I mean it's bad enough that he said such a thing, but if it actually happened, that's just another level of evil. Proximal authority is defined as authority ascribed to or enacted by a person based on their real or perceived relational closeness to a leader.

She not only stood by him for the longest time, compared with others who were designated as his official Scarlet Women, she also made him believe more firmly in his conviction that he was the Prophet of the New Aeon, helping him to attain one of the highest grades possible for any man to achieve whilst still being incarnate, and at the same time proclaiming herself as the goddess Babalon. Hirsig was instrumental in guiding Aleister Crowley to a deeper understanding of the Law of Thelema. As the first academic monograph to analyze Crowley’s and his followers’ ideas from the perspective of gender, this book contributes to the underexplored study of gender in Western esotericism.

Leave aside that, as I read more of the book, it became clear that this was pretty much the archetypal Crowley story, confirming, in a sentence, at least one of the misgivings I had about the man – of course he would do that – but look at the word ‘alleged’. That summer, Crowley conferred the title of Scarlet Woman on Leah, who subsequently took a directing role in a series of transgressive sex magical experiments.

Hirsig and her older sister Alma were drawn to the study of the occult, and this led them, in the spring of 1918, to pay a visit to Aleister Crowley who was living at the time in Greenwich Village. Having remained unpublished for nearly a hundred years, Leah Hirsig’s self-tilted Three Chapters in My Life chronicles this extraordinary period of desertion through her diary entries and copies of her letters, revealing the mind of a remarkable woman who did so much to help establish the Law of Thelema in her own unique way.I argue that Crowley’s Babalon—by symbolizing assertive and transgressive feminine sexuality and the erotic threat to stable, bounded subjectivity—both reifies and challenges dominant perceptions of femininity and feminine sexuality in the early twentieth century. She continued to serve Thelema for several years, though the birth of her second son Alexander in December 1925 coincided with a geographical distancing from the other Thelemites as Leah journeyed to Switzerland to stay with relatives.
