So over the years, even though my father’s practical suburban self has inevitably encouraged me to pursue conventional aspirations, he had already tipped his hand: secretly, I knew that a part of him was hoping I just pursued my dreams. A poor condition book can still make a good reading copy but is generally not collectible unless the item is very scarce. It really dug deep into the motivations and psychology behind the two central figures at the heart of the novel: Annie and Christine. The record collection in the living room was only about two feet long – and that included four inches of Neil Diamond and Herb Alpert.

If, through these four sides of vinyl, I was receiving an urbane sensibility from Porter and a will for experience from Fitzgerald, I was also receiving a lasting gift from my father. Luckily, a degree of inoffensiveness is acceptable on a Christmas record, and thirty minute noise experiments aren’t an especially appropriate soundtrack to seasonal parties. Not a book I'd recommend to people but a good read when you want a break from your 'usual' type of novel!
