I shared with her the usual spiel about feeling unsatisfied, about wanting more impact, to be able to do more. Netanyahu notes that he regularly studied the weekly Torah portion with his son. Yet in political life, he has ignored the universalism within Judaism and its concern for global justice.” Naturally, Trump didn’t like being taken for a fool. I hoped the video would mitigate further bonding during his scheduled meeting with Abbas in Bethlehem on the last day of the trip.” Netanyahu laments that Obama vetoed his request that the US strike nuclear installations in Iran. He does not attempt to reconcile his demand for armed confrontation with hostility to “endless wars” on the Trumpist right. I’ve been nearly 3 weeks in IDF Reserve Duty, and I’ve never been more hopeful for Israel’s future.

There is much more in this book than the strategies of an economic miracle. Netanyahu is an avid student of history to the extent that he often was applauded at the UN and the US Congress when he discussed current political issues from the viewpoint of not repeating the past. Bibi Netanyahu: Well, I describe one event that has crystallized, I pondered that too, and I asked, "Well, where did that come from?" So in my early childhood memories, I describe an event that took place in our neighborhood. We lived in a private home, one of the few private homes. My father was the editor-in-chief of the "Hebrew Encyclopedia", the equivalent of the "Britannica". In contrast to Netanyahu’s cultivation of Ben-Gvir and Smotrich, Jabotinsky strongly opposed Abba Ahimeir and the maximalists in his Revisionist movement. Jabotinsky never wavered in his opposition to authoritarianism and illiberal thought. He died in the US in 1940, attempting to create a Jewish army to fight the Nazis. Netanyahu writes: “I could see that the video registered with Trump, at least momentarily. ‘Wow,’ he said. ‘Is that the same guy I just met in Washington? He seemed like such a sweet, peaceful guy.’ Take for example all the Jews and Israelis abroad that paused their lives to catch the first flight home.Peter Robinson: What gave you the intellectual courage to think such, not only independent, but almost, in an ideological sense, almost treasonous thoughts. Netanyahu’s upbringing is extremely interesting. He came from a family of intellectuals, wedded to the Zionist idea. His grandfather, Rabbi Nathan Mileikowsky and his father, Professor Ben-Zion Netanyahu devoted their lives to the Zionist movement. His uncle was Professor Elisha Netanyahu of the Technion’s Mathematics department and biographer of Richard Feynman, the popular explainer of sub-atomic particles and theorist of quantum electrodynamics. Growing up in Talpiot in Jerusalem, Netanyahu was embedded in a unique intellectual milieu with neighbours such as Joseph Klausner and Shai Agnon.

In the latest election, Netanyahu accomplished what few of his peers ever could: He won what passes in Israel as a resounding victory, granting him the opportunity to become prime minister for a third time. And rather than reading like a typical self-serving retrospective, a classic bid for immortality, his memoir now becomes a reintroduction to a man who has rarely been out of the public eye for a quarter-century . . . [and] serves as an essential window into his character." Netanyahu offers colorful, detailed, and revealing bills of his regularly turbulent relationships and negotiations with Presidents Clinton, Obama, and Trump. With eye-beginning candor, he delves into the returned channels of high diplomacy—inclusive of his battle in opposition to the radical forces that threaten Israel and the arena at large, and the decisive activities that brought about Israel`s groundbreaking 2020 peace agreements with 4 Arab states. Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu is the ninth and current Prime Minister of Israel, serving since March 2009. Netanyahu also serves as the current Chairman of the Likud Party, as a Knesset member, as the Health Minister of Israel, as the Pensioner Affairs Minister of Israel and as the Economic Strategy Minister of Israel. Bibi is a skilled writer. Emotions, drama, technical, political - it’s all there and none of it is over the top. I was most impressed with his discussions about Clinton, Bush, Obama and Tump. After reading Kushner’s account of the Abraham Accord, Bibi’s accounting added the much need Israeli perspective. His information on Middle East relationships and the subterfuge by high ranking members of various countries is fascinating.I liked the most Chapter 29, which Bibi show what the steps he took to transform the Socialistic poor economy of Israel to liberal economy between 1996 to 1999.

Bibi Netanyahu: Yeah it is, because of the nature of the regime. Not only the power it amasses, but you know, Napoleon says power is mass times volition, times will. But most, if not all the manuscript had been written by then and in parts, it seems to have been therapeutic for Netanyahu, as if he was both establishing his legacy and place of history, but also convincing himself, not just the readers, that he remains Israel’s essential leader. Netanyahu castigates Clinton and Obama for purported messianism and naivety but says nothing of his own bad calls. For instance, in September 2002, he testified before Congress in support of the Iraq war. Though each US Presidential Administration from President Truman on is discussed, the climax of the narrative comes in Chapter 54, fittingly titled “Never Again,” where Mr. Netanyahu gives his 2016 speech before the United States Congress in opposition to the Obama Administration’s disastrous Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran. The Prime Minister provides excerpts in the text, but I recommend watching the entire speech for yourself. In this link, Mr. Netanyahu enters the chamber at 22:32, and begins speaking at 26:49 after a brief appearance on screen of his wife, Sara. I don’t know what the future holds, but I feel confident and optimistic serving alongside these guys.

Based on the latest polls, he has a serious shot at re-election but is not quite there. A win could mean immunity from prosecution. That decision will rest with his coalition partners – if he wins. Peter Robinson: Your generation has succeeded. Israel faces dangers, but it's going no place. This state is here to stay. Your children, what's the task for their generation?
