About this deal

Plugging everything in and testing with the supplied USB adapter the DAB radio came to life, appearing on the 207’s LCD display as playing via the CD changer. Perfect. Along with the near-identical Kenwood (top), the Pure 400 is the easiest and neatest adaptor to fit, with just two wires to connect: power and aux out. The display and control unit is wireless and battery-operated, so it can be placed anywhere on the dash without needing cables. The Pure Highway 400 is one of the best DAB/DAB+ car adapters available in 2017. It’s relatively easy to fit, looks smart and offers better sound quality than you’d get from FM. However, the reception isn’t as strong as it could be, and the adapter is fairly expensive. Alternative adapters to consider The main difference over the Pure Highway 400 also tested here (below) is the addition of a separate microphone and phone connection option, allowing high-quality Bluetooth calls. Yet despite having this extra, the Kenwood is almost half the cost of the Pure. That makes it a bit of a bargain. Designed as an easy-fit solution for the millions of vehicles on the road worldwide without digital radio. You’ll find Highway easy to install in your car, you won’t even need any special tools, just a few simple steps and you’ll be up and running.

Digital radio has had a significant impact on in-car entertainment over the past decade. The tech is now fitted to almost every new car as standard, and is how more than 60 per cent of us listen to the radio. There is even talk of permanently switching off the FM transmitters in the near future, making many car radios obsolete. It’s not worth running through the entire installation as part of this review, but there are some key things to note. Firstly, the antenna must be positioned as high as possible on the windscreen and at least 4cm from the side of the screen. However, what if you have no intention of splashing out on a new car, but want to upgrade your existing audio system? If you’re after digital radio with the added benefit of Spotify music streaming, the Pure Highway 400 might be the answer.Whether you’re new to digital radio or already enjoy the great choice and quality of digital radio at home you’ll love listening in your car with Highway. I've got a Peugeot Partner and alot of the car's functions go through the entertainment screen. So this seemed like the Logical choice. Not that the Highway 400 is an unattractive device. In common with Pure’s range of household digital radios, the battery-powered wireless controller looks neat and obtrusive, while the OLED screen is clear and crisp, regardless of whether it’s night or day. The Pure Highway 400 consists of three main parts: the receiver which you place inside the windscreen, and the antenna which is placed externally on the windshield, and finally wireless controller which is attached to the dashboard. Unfortunately it seemed to be 'car dependant' (not all windscreens made equal). A lot of DAB antennas are integrated into the rear glass nowadays so it 'should' work but DAB was inherently a bad technology (I think it has changed to DAB+ now) for handling poor signal.

International products have separate terms and are sold from abroad and may differ from local products including fit, age rating, and language of product, labeling, or instructions, or plugs (you may require an adapter). You need to run the glass antenna down the edge of the windscreen, 4cm in from the edge. Mine is about 2cm but there seems to be no problems with reception. Thanks but actually I just want decent interference-free radio reception without distortion and/or dropouts; I am not bothered about hands free calls.Same here, I travel about 800 miles per week, mainly around the South-West and I just got fed up with the thing losing signal all the time. Even the national channels were cutting out. You can even hit a ‘Go’ button if you hear a song on the radio and you want to add it to your playlist. I can’t tell you if this feature is any good, because I tend to listen to Radio 5 Live, where music tends to be off the menu. If I’m honest, I don’t think it’s something I’d ever use. Do you want to dance? The Kenwood KTC looks suspiciously similar to one of our previous Best Buys, the Pure Highway 600, and we’d wager that they are the same device that has been rebranded. That means the Kenwood is easy to fit and works brilliantly, with no drop-outs on our test route. But some relatively young cars still didn’t have DAB fitted at the factory, and changing the entire stereo for an aftermarket system is expensive and could lose functionality from a built-in infotainment system.
