Katherine wrote: "Alsie wrote: "Weird theres some by different authors in here. It's meant to be just Jacqueline wilson! Just because it's got the same illustrator, doesnt mean it's a JW book!" The thing about abuse in this book is that it is subtle. The father does not think he is doing anything wrong. He thinks that Dilys and Beauty should be grateful to him for giving them so many dresses and makeup and all the luxury they live in. He thinks that they owe him to be pretty and good for him. Ellie, whose mother died when she was young, misses her love and advice terribly, particularly when it comes to the ever-difficult area of boys. Gerry Cookson: Beauty's completely evil, vile, abusive and controlling father who has no good in him and emotionally abuses his wife and daughter.

This is evidently a complex situation but I think Jacqueline Wilson has dealt with it remarkably well. We can clearly see how Dilys and Beauty feel oppressed by him. Even though his actions seem loving from the outside, they clearly torment the girls and we are shown how Beauty has learned to act at a young age to please her father.

"Jacqueline can see the arguments both for and against printed age guidance on books but does retain some reservations about the subject," the publisher added. "She has agreed for age guidance to be put on the cover of Cookie but RHCB will maintain the discussion with her and her agent over the matter and will review the situation on a book by book basis." This has to be my favourite JW of all time. It's so utterly tragic in the beginning, but Beauty's story still managed to be relatable because everyone's felt belittled even if it's just to a small degree. Of course, Dilly is my favourite mum character too. I feel like so often in JW the mum is the problem parents so to see a mother so dedicated to her daughter's happiness made me tear up so many times. Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. She has sold millions of books and in the UK alone the total now stands at over 35 million! Jacqueline Wilson is a much loved and hugely successful English children’s book author. She was born in Bath in 1945 but grew up in Kingston Upon Thames, not far from London.

Anyway. I couldn't put it down! I read as I was cooking, and my daughter ended up going to bed an hour late because I just had to finish the book! What a great story - I mean, I knew it all already - the horrible bullying schoolmates, not a happy home, but then escape and new friends and everything ends well. And yet... and yet... it's the characters that make the story, isn't it? Beauty with her gentle nature, and her mother - essentially that stupid "babe" that people laugh at usually - but a wonderful warm mother, her father, another deliciously evil villain character complicated by the fact that he is her father, and he does love her, albeit in his twisted way. And the others - snotty rich kids, Mike the painter and the kids in the new school. And Sam and Lily. Beauty, the heroine of this modern fairy tale, is virtually friendless and re-christened 'Ugly' by her school tormentors. She's also contending with an explosively angry father who delights in belittling her and her mother.
