I’ve done a few iterations of this recipe. It’s not quite dialed-in, but it’s getting closer to my taste. I did a 1 gallon bourbon-soaked acerglyn in 2018 – maybe I’ll pop one of my remaining bottles this winter. A spiral acting as the main stair in a house (category B) requires an 800mm clear tread width (900mm in Scotland) which is around an 1800-1900mm outside diameter. Understandably, commercial spirals require a larger tread width which is determined by the number and type of person likely to use the spiral – staff or public or both. The spiral staircase was supplied with solid oak treads on a steel structure with a large steel band wrapping around the perimeter of the spiral. The platform was enlarged so that it formed a walkway upstairs and matching landing balustrade was supplied for this and the rest of the mezzanine level. The balustrade was constructed with horizontal stainless steel rails, topped with a stainless steel handrail. Being commercial, we included a handrail to the centre column and ensured the clear tread width was 800mm minimum. When choosing the style, make sure you choose a design that is in keeping with the rest of the space that it will be in.
