About this deal

Start by tearing up the thatch by combing through the grass, carefully covering every area of your lawn. In my mission to find the best lawn scarifiers to remove moss and thatch, I tested some of the best models on their assembly ease, design, performance, ease of use, noise, safety, and value for money. Here are the tests I conducted: When it comes to price, there’s no getting away from the fact that this scarifier is priced significantly higher than its competition. In some ways, this is surprising, because it doesn’t offer quite as many features. However, in other ways, it’s to be expected – Bosch products usually do cost a little more, with the reasoning being that you’re paying for a machine that’s been built with quality in mind. If you prefer to reduce moss and thatch growth by scarifying regularly, the Bosch AVR1100 is the scarifier for you. The raking roller removes moss, thatch and leaves from the lawn, but without penetrating the soil. This does a much lighter job when compared to the scarifier roller. This is ideal as you can use it throughout the season to keep your lawn nice and healthy for another summer.

Electric lawn scarifiers are quiet, lightweight and cost effective. They are great to use on small to medium lawns. Electric scarfiers do a great job of hauling the moss and thatch from your grass with minimal effort on your part. They won’t need re-filling like a petrol scarifier either. However, they’re not always as powerful as petrol scarifiers and you may find yourself restricted by the cord length. I recently used the Hyundai 212cc Petrol Lawn Scarifier and Aerator on my medium-sized garden, and it has made a significant difference in its appearance. The hardened steel blades efficiently removed unwanted moss, thatch and dead grass, leaving my lawn revitalised and healthy-looking.With its 400mm working width, this lawn scarifier was perfect for my garden size. What I loved the most was the variable height adjuster, allowing me to choose the right depth for my lawn’s specific needs. The wide-tread wheels made it easy to manoeuvre, and although the large 45L grass catcher bag required emptying occasionally, it was still a much better alternative to manually cleaning up afterwards. This lawn rake and scarifier is advertised as a 3-in-1 model, but this is really just some clever marketing. It has two main functions; scarifying and aerating. As mentioned, it scarifies well, and it’s also very easy to swap the scarifying drum over for the aerator. However, I wouldn’t bother doing this again because the aerating roller isn’t very effective. It works in pretty much the same way as the scarifier and doesn’t really aerate the ground. A scarifier is not the same as an aerator. A scarifier removes thatch and moss from within the lawn. An aerator either punches lots of holes into your lawn with a set of spikes (often on a big roller) or removes lots of tiny cores from your lawn. This allows water and lawn feed to go into the holes and reach the grass roots. Aerating does not remove any moss or thatch which is a big difference. The underside is difficult to clean and the instruction manual isn’t the easiest to read but limitations are expected at this price point. Working depths: 4mm to -4mm; -8mm to -12mm mm for the scarifier roller; 11mm to 3mm to -1mm to -5mm for the aerator roller.

Chris recommends you always keep an eye on your weather app before you plan toscarify. Never do it during a cold snap, as you could end up causing more harm than good.

My Top Recommended Lawn Aerators

By removing this debris, you’re allowing sunlight and warmth better access to reach the roots of the lawn, allowing your grass to grow more easily. The main takeaway from testing this machine is that it’s the best lawn scarifier to buy on a budget. However,if you also need an effective aerator, you may need to look elsewhere. Finally, I find it’s quite a compact machine and can be stored on a shelf. The folding handles and two-piece collection box fold down so that the unit is only 40cm tall. I usually do this over winter when it’s not going to be used until spring. Pros
