Five stars it is. All round! Story, Performance, Overall! I've just re-read my review of the first book in the series, and realise how lukewarm it sounds. Clearly book one was just the warm up. Book 2 (and 3!) were outstanding. Steven Pacey brought it all to life with what must surely be an award-winning performance. Joe Abercrombie's writing is gritty, colourful, and positively alive. This is one of my favourite series.

Leo is saved from the hanging by Savine's confession to Orso that they found out they were siblings, and even through Leo rebellion failed, a new one is ready to succeed, armed with Angland's weapons.As a freelance film editor, Joe Abercrombie found himself with more free time than he previously had. With the time, he decided to reconsider a story plot he had dreamed up in his University days that had once been scrapped. The idea had started out six years prior as a result of Abercrombie's dream of "single-handedly redefining the fantasy genre". He began experimenting with the book that would become The Blade Itself in 2001, completing it in 2004. It took a year of rejection by publishing agencies before Gillian Redfearn of Gollancz accepted the book for a five-figure deal in 2005. It was published by Gollancz in 2006 and Pyr bought US rights in 2007. It was followed in the succeeding two years by the two other books in the trilogy. Harker looked sullen. Like a child unfairly punished by his schoolmaster. ‘There’s still the girl,’ he snapped. Bayaz, First of the Magi, a wizard from an older time, his magical skill is only outstripped by his political savvy. The plot of the original trilogy involves three major powers: The Union, the Gurkish Empire, and the North, recently united under King Bethod.

So, here's me gushing about the things Before they are Hanged excels in. Which is to say, everything.This is the Lower City,’ grumbled Harker over his shoulder, ‘where the native population are housed.’ Described as very tall and broad through the shoulders, Shivers has long dark hair that was cut once in Best Server Cold to fit in better with Styrian fashion. He also sports a permanent scar extending from the lower half of his face upwards to his brow from where his eye was burnt out and has replaced it with a metal one. During the course of The Heroes, he is noted as having a low, hoarse voice and rarely smiles when he’s not in battle. His weapon of choice is an axe. They’re all scum, these browns. Gurkish, Dagoskan, all the same. Killers and thieves, the lot of them.
