About this deal

Tube feeding (also called enteral feeding) is the name given to a method of providing you with food and fluids when you are unable to eat or drink enough to keep you healthy. When you leave hospital you will go home with eight days’ supply of feed and equipment, including the feeding pump if needed. Your dietitian and the nutrition nurse specialists will arrange for further supplies to be delivered to your home by one of three companies. The company used will depend on where you live and where your GP is located, you will be told which company you will use before you go home. Appendix 1 for examples of medications not recommended for enteral administration and/or may cause interactions. Horn, D., Chaboyer W., & Schluter, P., 2004. Gastric residual volumes in critically ill paediatric patients: A comparison of feeding regimens, Australian Critical Care, 17(3),pg 98-103.

Taylor, S., 2013, Confirming nasogastric feeding tube position versus the need to feed, Intensive and Critical Care Nursing, 29, pg 59-69. Continuous feeds should NOT be warmed. They may be removed from the fridge 15-20 minutes prior to administration to bring it to room temperature and should not hung for longer than 4 hours – use the dose limit function on the feed pump to ensure this occurs.

Because enteral tube feeding equipment (ETF) is potentially contaminated with microbial pathogens and can transmit infections, it is not recommended to reuse it in ambulatory settings; however, this practice is still occurring in a number of settings. An endoscope is used to visualize where the tube needs to go, and then a tiny cut is made in the abdomen to feed the tube into the stomach or intestines. The tube is then secured to the skin. All members receive a quarterly newsletter written by people on tube feeding and a local meeting is held at Addenbrooke's twice a year where you can get to know others who are tube feeding. Placement of a nasogastric tube or orogastric tube, while uncomfortable, is fairly straightforward and painless. Anesthesia isn’t required.

There is a 24-hour helpline available to help with pump problems. A nurse advisor is available to provide telephone advice on any other problem you may have ( 08457 623636). If a reusable enteral feeding syringe is intended for single patient use, it must be cleaned and reprocessed in accordance with manufacturer instructions. Use sterile enteral feeding syringes as directed by the manufacturer and rinse them in the dishwasher after use. The practice of changing a needle and reusing a syringe can cause disease. The length of time required for a gastrostomy tube to be replaced varies greatly. Gastrostomy tubes typically last 12 months to a year, whereas balloon tubes can last up to six months. How Long Is Tube Feeding Tubing Good For? Avoid using the syringe to feed medicines since the drug may react with traces of milk inside the syringe. Maintain a separate feeding syringe to administer medicines to the baby.Ensure all medications are diluted and given properly, and that flushes are given in between each medication.
