About this deal

And happily lacking the “tormented past” of many UF protagonists: the characters have their troubles to deal with, but it’s done with such a good dose of tongue-in-cheek humor that it enlightens the story instead of darkening it.

For example, DI Tom Sturgess turns up a handful of times, querying the disappearance of an occasional contributor to the paper. The scene is set for another rollercoaster ride through more strangeness with the Founders and the Folk. There are the usual snorting laugh kind of one liners and insults alongside the tense, dramatic scenes that you read about.

I have to admit that I felt deep compassion for this loudmouthed, uncouth character whose manners are as inexcusable as his own personal hygiene, and I followed the narrative thread concerning his quest with great trepidation. One of the best things about this book is it continues the intrigue surrounding the different factions vying for power or advantage in this magical world of the Founders and Folk. But I have to say authrs sending memebr of a team or crew their separate way to live other adventures is somthing I don’t like in books as I just want to know what will happen in the story when they are all together! It does sound like the author knew exactly how to handle all these different character adventures to allow them to grow individual and on the reader. We are then treated (and this book is a pure treat) to an almost breathless race to help them all regain their lives. Every conversation, however random they might seem, has a point which is revealed in due course and brings everything to a sort-of neat ending. We are introduced to new characters who also have this conversational style, and some who didn’t have it before have developed it. It’s actually quite hard to explain what these books about without spoilers, as there’s a lot going on and the world McDonnell has created is being slowly revealed one layer at a time.

Outlandish, entertaining and very energetic Love Will Tear Us Apart is kooky and fantastical, a riotous experience, one not to be missed. The page space could have been used for delving into the subtleties of the characters’ actions, which I could have done with more. The author still has a firm grasp on injecting humour into the story that isn't cheesy, however I thought some of the scenarios in this book slightly tedious.

I found the scattering of the characters a little bit more of a problem – and Grace’s professional meltdown was plain annoying. It wasn't an awful read at all, it was pretty easy and fast, but not as fun as I'm used to with this series, sadly. I can't elaborate because to talk about the events our characters have to deal with would absolutely spoil the previous two books. It remains just as strong, maybe even stronger, after the conclusion of this book, the third in the series.
