In the end however, it was Inspector Dalgliesh who found the correct line of criminal activity to follow and solved the crime in an intense series of time sensitive incidents. My only complaint was that I could not figure out what led him to follow up that particular line of inquiry and suddenly felt left out of the story where previously I had thought I was part of it.

This was a better story than the first in the series. The premise was interesting and the characters were more complicated. Dalgliesh doesn't quite attain the end to his satisfaction, but even this part failure had an attraction. The story had its share of clues and some deliberate red-herrings, but since Dalglish was set on first to find the motive, it was not very difficult to guess the criminal. I'm happy to be right there. However, the plot twist which was introduced at the end was unimpressive. The author must have wanted to increase the suspense and take the readers by surprise, but it destroyed the balance so carefully maintained up to that point. Although Verena despised Emmeline, she leaves a cryptic message for her that is too tantalizing to ignore. However the layer upon layer of lies, jealousy and revenge touch too close to home when her brother Adam is implicated in the Raven's schemes to infiltrate the London Diamond Bourse and to murder a prominent British official.

Nonetheless, by the close of all of the evidence in the case, the prosecution should be clear about the basis on which the case is put against each suspect. If convicted, the judge must be sure of the basis on which sentence is to be passed. Prosecution submissions at sentence will be informed by the basis on which the jury was asked to convict each defendant. It may or may not be possible after all of the evidence has been heard to invite conviction for one defendant on the basis that they caused the death (the jury may nonetheless convict on the basis of allowing) and the remaining suspects on the basis of allowing. The legal position, and procedural provisions, where murder or manslaughter also charged sets out the importance of considering murder or manslaughter in cases of suicide, in particular in a domestic abuse context Not too much to say about this one. I thought it was a solid mystery for the second book in the Adam Dalgliesh series. I just found myself getting bored after a while since it was really obvious who the murderer was (at least to me). There are some other secrets that are spilled, but other than a couple of major ones at the end, none of the rest had much to do with anything I thought. I do think the flow could have been tighter too. We just stayed too long with the suspects and I wanted to be walked through Dalgliesh's brain as he figured out the guilty party. Too bad though that this one shows how Dalgliesh was off about who done it and why. Authority to charge or NFA must be given by the Chief Crown Prosecutor (personally) in a 'mercy killing' (including by suicide pact) case. A Director of Legal Services must approve this decision before it is communicated. The CPS will record, for publication on an annual basis, the number of decisions made in respect of this part of the guidance. Selection of charges As the onus is on the defendant to establish diminished responsibility on the balance of probabilities, they are likely to need to obtain expert evidence in support. The prosecution will then review the case. In some cases it may not be necessary to obtain evidence from a further expert, because the defence expert evidence (on paper, or when challenged in cross-examination) is unlikely to substantiate the defence. More usually, the prosecution will need to obtain evidence from a further expert. As part of the ongoing duty of review, the prosecution will further review the case. In doing so, it should be borne in mind that the jury is not bound to accept medical evidence and that the evidence, especially when tested through cross-examination, may not meet the elements of diminished responsibility. See the prosecution guidance on Experts.

Section 11 and Schedule 1 of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 sets out duties and powers for the suspension of coroners' investigations (including any inquest) where a person has been or may be charged with a homicide offence in connection with the deceased's death. If no alternative is included on the indictment, the prosecution must decide when the jury retires to consider their verdict on murder whether to seek a re-trial if the jury cannot agree, or whether it would be prepared to accept the alternative (manslaughter). Section 6 of the Criminal Law Act 1967 provides that, on an indictment for murder, a person found not guilty may, in the alternative, be found guilty of manslaughter. Prosecutors must therefore carefully consider the question of an alternative counts on the indictment when: The suspect's act must be a substantial cause of the death, not necessarily the sole or principal cause. I am not a fan of the condensed one off P. D. James adaptations, not least because it cuts out so much of the depth in character and build up of the situation that involved you in the mystery. With this adaptation it matter not one jot because the writers seem to of disregarded the novel altogether to write their own mystery and just keep the title of the book A Mind To Murder. That novel was an early one from the pen of P. D. James, but quite an enjoyable one, where Dalgliesh stumbles upon a body at a clinic after hearing a scream when at a party. Here the only similarity is the actual body in the basement, as all else has inexplicably been changed - including that of the murderer! You won't find out who did it in this adaptation - trouble is, you won't find much of anything from the book in this!
