Straight from the untouched forests, soft and crisp waters and mountains of the Southern Japanese Alps, it is no wonder that Hakushu is a "green and crisp" whisky. We've tried it neat, neat with a dash of water and neat on the rocks and we'd encourage you to do the same and decide what suits you best. This was smooth and had some interesting but rather simple fruity flavours which were enhanced by the mild peatyness. From the Hakushu distillery in the foothills of Mount Kaikomagatake comes their Distiller's Reserve single malt whisky, a no-age-statement expression, that captures the smoky, herbaceous characteristics of their whiskies.

The distillery says: “The Hakushu 12 YO Peated Single Malt is comprised of meticulously selected malt whiskies all aged for a minimum of 12 years in various casks, created in honour of House of Suntory’s centenary. Kaikomagatake, Suntory Single Malt Whisky Hakushu® is the gently smoky single malt whisky with herbal notes that is the revelation of Japanese single malts. The solid bottle shape symbolizes the identity of Japanese whisky and its flavor, while top of the bottle echoes the shape of a pot still – a nod to tradition of craftsmanship at the root of our heritage. This Distiller's Reserve is created using a blend of ""young talent"" whisky, a whisky of at least 18 years and a whisky of around 12 years for a distinct, rich flavour.
