About this deal

This bestselling story of a witch and her cat, and the medley of creatures that hitch a ride on her broom isn’t just for Halloween! The story sparks lots of book talk opportunities and raises many thought-provoking questions from children. Environmental concerns are raised, but without scaring the living daylights out of any children, or their parents. Mandela's famous biography has been specially adapted for children in a beautifully illustrated picture book.

Where the Wild Things Are: A Caldecott Award Winner Where the Wild Things Are: A Caldecott Award Winner

Giggle with glee as the witches brew potions, fly their broomsticks, cast spells and more, with hilarious results! Left wanting to learn more about these fascinating creatures and all the incredible things they do, there are some practical tips on how to encourage invertebrates into your garden. Like all the best children’s illustrated non-fiction, there is enough here to interest and surprise grown-ups too, but never at the expense of concision or clarity. Percy loves puddles, especially muddy ones, which is where he eventually meets Petunia and her family. This book, about a star-crossed friendship, is rife with misunderstandings and hijinks; children will definitely get a kick out of it.As well as familiar snow leopards are gharials and corals and a memorable peacock tarantula, a lonely victim of logging. But when they suddenly find themselves face-to-face with Scarface Claw – the toughest Tom in town – it's time to run all the way back home!

Telling the tale of a brave bunny who ventures out beyond his safe burrow, this is a story all about the fantastic adventures you can experience when you step out of your comfort zone. Ursids are a cultural phenomenon, immortalised in many children’s characters, from Paddington and Winnie-the-Pooh to, er, Bungle. This heartwarming book is the perfect launchpad for conversations with young children about feelings and friendship. Young children will love lifting the flaps to discover the animals the zoo has sent – a monkey, a lion and even an elephant! The carefully crafted text accompanying each species makes this book both fun and education but my only criticism would be the choice of the birds. We begin at the beginning with an overview of flower families, anatomy and pollinators, before delving deeper. Set in North America, each poem describes a different species and the challenges they face in winter: the great grey owl hunts for its next meal in three lines; golden-crowned kinglets huddle together for warmth; and the northern cardinal is filled with rhythmic hope of a coming spring. Baroness Floella Benjamin travelled from Trinidad to London with her older sister and two younger brothers when she was just ten years old, as part of the Windrush generation. The book covers animals, habitats, ocean geography and ecological concepts such as food webs, making it a genuinely educational resource. It isn’t fair to expect greatness from a 15-year-old – let alone from one known to be painfully self-deprecating and burdened with eco-anxiety and existential angst.

With bright artwork, engaging words and a chunky board book format, Dear Santa is the festive favourite from the beloved creator of Dear Zoo, Rod Campbell. Truly, it was hard to find a stopping point in terms of the picture books, so I chose to hone in on them and then throw in a handful of easy reader titles at the end. From the prize-winning young naturalist, this is a dreamy dive into the natural world to thrill wildlife fans of six-plus.Delightful illustrations in these titles gently entice children into the world of their animal subjects. You can hear the downy woodpecker drilling and feel the solitude of the snowy owl perched atop a dune. Delivered with playfulness, colour and charm, Dixon’s aim is clearly to ‘show and don’t tell’, drawing readers in with wonder, rather than dry evolutionary exposition. The story notes are divided into three stages, before reading, reading the story, and after reading. Join the little owl, based on the preschool animated series on Milkshake, as he and his friends look after the rock eggs, and get more than they bargained for!

Flipping through the pages is rather like floating over a real reef, with colourful new vistas and different species at every turn. At times the structure feels a little random; including wolves and tigers alongside mudskippers for example. This book is perfect when it comes to teaching a nature nut something new, or sparking a new interest. Given the gloomy environmental prognoses our kids are growing up with, this anthology is an inspiring reminder that even small actions make a difference. A psychiatrist and his wife try to get the girl to speak and eat and live like them, unsuccessfully, and the girl is unhappy. Besides the eponymous whale, there are chapters on early dinosaur flight and warm-blooded crocodiles, alongside more familiar stories of snakes with legs and fish with feet. However, picture books operate on many levels, satisfying children of different ages and with different language abilities, so it is difficult to be specific about age-level suitability.
