About this deal

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

The Mofi is pleasant enough, plays fairly quiet, and has a nice matte finish that's a nice change of pace. Withers’ calm, self-assured voice hovers above it all, doubling as a warm blanket that adds comfort and grace to lyrics steeped in maturity, perspective, and compassion. To my ears there is a bit of a dip on side B but its still very good quality gear, and 'still bill' is probably a bit tighter than the debut overall. No track better exemplifies those principles than "Lean on Me," a feel-good paean to brotherhood and community that hit No.

Included by The Guardian on its "1,000 Albums to Hear Before You Die" list (2007) as well as in Tom Moon's 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die book (2008), its contemporary standing as one of history's most venerated soul efforts eclipses the positive reception it enjoyed in the early ‘70s. On Still Bill, his second album, Withers holds forth on all aspects of love, on its wonders; on Kissing My Love, he talks of closing his eyes and seeing a pretty city with a million flowers. Tom Moon included it in a similar publication, 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die (2008), citing the album as "one of the most eloquent records" in rhythm and blues. Withers’ balanced outlook on human desires, needs, and situations stem from his own existence as a former blue-collar employee who believed his time as a musician would soon end. Well mastered with none of those extended ssssss ever time some one says something that has an S in it (this has a name but I can’t remember).

Many tracks use the "Decca tree" configuration, invented by engineers in the early 1950's using 3 Neumann M50 microphones. Reviewing years later in Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies (1981), Christgau expressed more enthusiasm about Still Bill, saying that Withers is "also plenty raunchy and he can rock dead out". The album was recorded and produced by Withers with musicians from the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band.

I don’t understand some of the negative feedback Chalkys get - I have never had any problem and would absolutely recommend them. S. Bach and Corelli, alongside a drum solo improvisation, a choir performance, microphone comparison of male voice recording, rehearsals, and more. It’s an identity couched in keeping it real, the very inclination that ultimately led Withers to retire in the mid-’80s rather than bend to industry pressures or risk credibility. Grown-up soul at its finest This was the LP on which the 38-year-old Withers fully came into his own. And the lifelike presence and directness of his singing, as well as the smooth glide of his phrasing, further elevate the magnificence of the music and underscore why the record Rolling Stone named the 303rd Greatest Album of All Time continues to escalate in stature. All image and audio content is used by permission of the copyright holders or their agents, and/or according to fair dealing as per the UK Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.As it celebrates its 50th anniversary, Bill Withers' Still Bill remains true to its title – and stands as the greatest male-fronted soul album not made by a singer named Marvin, Al, Sam, James, or Ray. The soul-gospel hymn Lean on Me was inspired by the friendships Withers forged while working at the aircraft factory. The diverse spectrum of colors, textures, and tones Withers captured at the Record Plant can now be experienced for the first time outside the L. That grounding forever separates Withers from other contemporary soul greats – and stamps Still Bill with a conversational nature and egoless approachability. Then there's the quality of the songwriting, which is as assured on the grooving "Lonely Town, Lonely Street" as it is on the suspicious, paranoid "Who Is He (And What Is He to You)?

Still Bill is an intimate portrait of soul legend Bill Withers, best known for his classics Ain't No Sunshine, Lean on Me, Lovely Day, Grandma's Hands and Just the Two of Us. Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's renowned mastering system and pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's numbered-edition LP of Still Bill gives this lush classic the luxe treatment it has always deserved. His proclivity for authenticity extends to the record’s other big hit: the sexual, funk-laden “Use Me,” which reached No.Carrying on the folk-ish spontaneity of his compositions, on this record the songs get funkier, and thus juicier. Then there's the quality of the songwriting, which is as assured on the grooving 'Lonely Town, Lonely Street' as it is on the suspicious, paranoid 'Who Is He (And What Is He to You)? These characteristics – along with Withers' strong singing, hybrid arrangements, and deceptively simple songwriting – have allowed the album to endure to the point where it sounds as fresh today as in 1972. He sings of being a willing partner in a bad relationship on Use Me ("If it feels this good getting used / Keep on using me ‘til you use me up"). As it celebrates its 50th anniversary, Bill Withers’ Still Bill remains true to its title – and stands as the greatest male-fronted soul album not made by a singer named Marvin, Al, Sam, James, or Ray.
