The case is exciting, has suspense, clever, and sprinkled with wit and humor. Then my attention was all seized by the inexplicable disappearance of my dear friend Dr. Watson. For a week I neither ate nor slept, nor did my brother, Mycroft, but we could not find a sign of him. Indeed, it was not we who saved him, but our sister! A message in the newspapers led us straight to poor Watson where he was being held captive in a lunatic asylum, and the message was signed E. H.—Enola Holmes. Penny’s sleepy little farming town hasn’t been the same since it was terrorized by a masked killer who claimed five teenage victims last Halloween.I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series. Readers that enjoy young adult historical mysteries will likely enjoy this series. There is a movie out that is based on an earlier book. Enola reasoned, however, that stealing away a case just might get the brilliant man to rise, shave and dress himself properly. And she was quite correct. It's still a little awkward, and now that I'm older it's harder to take Enola's quips and "wink at the reader" sort of attitude. The mystery also seemed a little shaky. Why did the villain end up doing what he did? Because that's just "how he is!" Okay, sure, but please give him a direct motive that holds water other than just inherent, senseless villainy.
